Richard E. Root, an Owego graduate that went on to serve in the military and served for nine years as a Police Officer and Justice in Owego, N.Y., as well as other notable career accomplishments, passed away on March 14, 2024 and at the age of 99.

Although services were held in Santa Rosa, Calif., flags in the Village of Owego were flown at half-staff in honor of Root.
