On Oct. 20, a four-year hiatus ended when members and friends gathered at the Valley United Presbyterian Church to participate in a walk to raise money for Heifer International. The mission of Heifer International is to help the hungry become self-reliant.

John Simonds, a member of The Mission and Benevolence Committee, directed the activity. He reports that the event raised over $900. Heifer International uses such donations to help provide livestock and training to struggling families around the world so they can improve their daily nutrition, and earn income for life’s basic necessities.

The amount raised is enough to purchase a heifer plus other livestock. The gift will keep on giving because the recipients are required to “pass on the gift “of the animal’s first offspring to another needy family in their community.

The Valley United Presbyterian Church is located at 459 Park Ave. in Waverly.
