Candor Historical Society presents talk on Candor High School’s Envirothon Program

This month’s Candor Historical Society program, planned for March 27, will be a talk on the very successful Envirothon program at Candor High School. Dr. Jonathan Zisk, one of Candor’s Envirothon advisors, will be on hand, along with several students involved in the program, to explain this wonderful environmental education program to guests.

Candor High School has participated in the Envirothon for many years, consistently winning at the County and often the Regional levels. They have gone on from the Regional level to win the State level nine times, more than any other school in New York State. After winning at the State level the students have gone on to participate in the National competition.

The Envirothon program was designed to be a hands-on outdoor competition for high school students to encourage them to become interested in natural resource conservation and environmental issues. To accomplish this, the program tests the students’ knowledge of aquatic ecology, forestry, soils, wildlife, and current environmental issue. The local Soil and Water Conservation Offices sponsor it with the help of other cooperating state and federal natural resource agencies.

This program free and open to the public, and will take place at the Candor Town Hall, Owego Road, on Wednesday, March 27, at 7 p.m. For more information on this and other Candor Historical Society events, contact President Milton Dougherty by calling (607) 659-7357 or by email to Milton.dougherty@gmail.com.
