Question: My chunky kitty, Henry, is constipated. Is there anything I can do to help him?

Answer: If you are very worried about Henry, then take him to his veterinarian for the proper treatment. Feline constipation is usually caused by decreased motility of the colon (large intestine). As the colon contracts, water is absorbed out of the soft feces which turn into normal bowel movements. If motility is decreased, the feces sit for longer getting dryer and harder. These become very difficult to push out and can lead to straining and pain. If Henry is older, arthritis can come into play and cause discomfort during posturing. His chunkiness and lack of exercise can also predispose him to become backed up. Remember, straining in the litter box can be associated with urinary issues as well so a visit to his doc is advisable!

Question: My dog’s eyes shine in the dark! What is going on?

Answer: This is completely normal! Behind the retina, at the back of the globe, is a layer called the tapetum lucidum. This layer helps reflect light back into the retina which allows your pooch to see better in the dark!
