Redeemer Recital Series presents ‘A Concert for Organ and Brass’ on December 9

Come prepared to enjoy an afternoon of seasonal music for Brass, Organ, and Congregation to be held Dec. 9, at 3 p.m. at the Church of the Redeemer in Sayre, Pa. The program is presented by Larry W. Hoey, a well-known organist, pianist and past accompanist for the Valley Chorus, and “A Touch of Brass,” a quintet from Binghamton consisting of two trumpets, French horn, trombone, and tuba.

The concert will feature music for brass and combined works for organ and brass as well as a “sing-along” of Christmas carols including the “Hallelujah Chorus” from Handel’s Messiah. So, bring your best singing voice (listeners are welcome, too) and look forward to an afternoon of festive Christmas music.

This concert was actually planned for last December, but was postponed because the organ was damaged as the result of a roof replacement project and was not available for several months.

About the performers

Larry W. Hoey, organist for this concert, was appointed to his first church position at the age of 10, and this year celebrates 57 consecutive years as a church organist. Larry is currently music administrator, principal organist, and choral director for First Presbyterian Church in Endicott, N.Y. He is a member of the Binghamton chapter of the American Guild of Organists and serves on their executive board. Larry and his wife Karen live in Athens, Pa.

“A Touch of Brass” originated in 1983 under the direction of Charles Holmes and has performed as “Quintet-in-Residence” at First Presbyterian Church in Endicott, New York as well as throughout the United States and abroad. Their extensive repertoire includes both traditional and contemporary church music as well as renaissance, baroque, classical, romantic, contemporary, jazz, ragtime, patriotic and pop styles. They have recently recorded and released two new CD albums, “A Touch of Christmas Brass” and “American Road Trip.”

The program begins at 3 p.m. on Dec. 9, preceded by a prelude on the clock tower carillon at 2:45 p.m. It is free and open to the public. The next concert on the Recital Series is scheduled for March 24, 2019, and will feature music for violin, flute, organ, and piano.
