Owego Elks Lodge 1039 to host annual Hoop Shoot

The Owego Elks Lodge #1039 will be hosting its annual Hoop Shoot on Sunday, Nov. 4, at the Tioga County Boys and Girls Club. The Owego Elks Hoop Shoot is part of the Elks National Hoop Shoot Program, which is a free throw contest for all youth ages eight to 13 living in Tioga County or attending any of the schools located in Tioga County.  

Beginning with the Owego Elks Lodge contest, winning contestants have the opportunity to advance through district, state, regional and national competitions.  The program is free to all contestants. 

The Elks help sponsor contestants and their families at every level of competition. One girl and one boy from each division (eight to nine, ten to 11, and 12 to 13) will win a national title at the National Finals and have their names inscribed in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Two National Champions will receive the Getty Powell Award for most baskets made during the National Finals.

For all those interested in participating in the first level of the Hoop Shoot Free Throw Program, come to the Tioga County Boys and Girls Club on Sunday, Nov. 4. Registration will be from noon to 12:30 p.m. and the competition will begin promptly at 12:30 p.m. and run until all divisions are complete.  

Participants must bring a copy of their birth certificate, which can be handed in at the time of registration. Participants are assigned to divisions based on their age as of April 1, 2018. 

At the conclusion of the event, awards will be given to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners in each age group for both boys and for girls. 

During this event, contestants will learn about the importance of respect and good sportsmanship, as through each level of competition contestants are to support one another and learn to win or accept defeat gracefully.
