Heavy rains and flooding in July and August took a toll on the fence in the largest section of the Rebecca Weitsman Memorial Dog Park at Hickories Park in Owego, causing its temporary closure.

Many volunteer hours were spent cleaning up debris and filling holes on the walkways. The community responded and raised funds to help pay for fence repairs.

On Oct. 20, Lockheed Martin volunteers from the ‘Be the Difference Week’ project were joined by others to spread 40 yards (think 300 wheelbarrow loads) of wood chips in the Agility Area of the dog park. Thanks are extended to the volunteers and to Got Mulch? for help with this project.

As of Wednesday, it was reported that the dog park is now open. Volunteers are needed to help keep the park clean and safe. Do you enjoy outdoor opportunities to connect with dogs? Could you give two hours a week?

Volunteering at the Dog Park is a great way to give back to your community.
