On Sept. 1, 2018, Leonard Hilldale, owner and proprietor of The Auction Auditorium, located near the fairgrounds and on Elm Street in Owego, N.Y., opened his doors to the public for the first auction. According to Hilldale, the first auction had over 150 guests register.

And although the opening day was deemed a success, Hilldale noted some issues that will be worked out prior to the next auction, scheduled for Oct. 6.

Hilldale specifically noted that the length of the auction was just a bit too long, and that the online bidding was slowing the process.

To correct this problem, Hilldale plans to add flat screen televisions in the auditorium to allow guests to view the online bidding, real-time.

In the Auction Auditorium, guests were able to sit comfortably to view the items on a big screen that were up for bid. Because there were some delays due to the online bidding that was taking place as well, Hilldale stated on Thursday that he plans on adding flat screen televisions in the auditorium to allow guests to view the online bidding, real-time. Other enhancements that Hilldale is planning is a dining area where guests can watch the bidding, as well as a playroom for children that will also have screens to allow the parent or guardian to bid, real-time.

Will and Lori, out of Rochester, N.Y. and owners of Wilori Lane Antiques, attended the first auction last Saturday.

“This was a good turnout,” said Will, adding, “They have a few kinks to work out with the online bidding, but other than that, they are off to a good start.”

As far as sales, Hilldale noted a wooden painted sculpture that sold for $250, and another sale of a baby grand piano that went for $5.

“Being our first day, it was a great way to get a deal,” said Hilldale.

Auctions take place the first Saturday of each month, with the preview at 6 a.m. and the auction at 11 a.m. Auction items are also open for preview Tuesday through Saturday at the Elm Street location two weeks prior to each auction, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
