The Rebecca Weitsman Memorial Dog Park, located in Hickories Park in Owego, and maintained by the Owego Dog Owner’s Group (ODOG), suffered fence damage during last month’s flash flooding. And although the park has withstood water before, ODOG representatives stated that the force of the flooding is what caused the damage, and that it was an unusual circumstance.

With that said, ODOG volunteers went into action to create a GoFundMe Page to share on social media and in last week’s Owego Pennyaver.

Within a short amount of time, donations reached nearly half of the $8,000 goal, and more donations, in the form of checks, were anticipated.

La Familia Motorcycle Club stepped forward as well last week, and are donating 20 percent of the proceeds from an upcoming event to assist the park.

“We really had people coming forward to help with this,” said Nancy Eckstrom, ODOG volunteer and Charter member.

And thanks to a volunteer effort, organized by ODOG members, a cleanup of the park was performed, and the fencing was temporarily repaired to allow for the park to reopen last week.

This was good news for dog owners, whose best friends were ready for an afternoon run.
