Readers’ Column for the week of Sept. 9, 2018

You may call the Owego Pennysaver Readers’ Column at (607) 687-2378 24-hours a day, or e-mail comments to readerscolumn@stny.rr.com. We reserve the right to revise or reject any message.

I’m just wondering if it’s the Nichols Old Home Day’s 106th or 107th celebration. It was listed two different ways in the same paper that I was reading.

I wish the state of Pennsylvania, and New York too, would spray for mosquitoes. They are so bad you can’t even sit out on our back porch or be out in your backyard during the day. They are wicked!

I would like to comment on the disrespectful flags and the poor condition they are in going over the Court Street Bridge. They should be taken down if they are going to be hanging like that. They are ripped, tattered, faded. Also, when you come over the bridge at the light you are looking at the Owego that is made out of concrete that is all overgrown, nobody is taking care of that. We are supposed to be the coolest town but it’s getting pretty dumpy looking.

I’m calling in regards to the railroad tracks that go across Route 38 down by the high school. That’s getting to be a real bad tragic thing because if you hit it just right even if you slow down, you’re just taking out the front end of your vehicle. I don’t know who’s responsible, the state or would it be the railroad company; but it sure would be nice if they could straighten that out some.

I have a correction to the last letter that was in this column last Sunday. It was Kate Smith, not Ethel Merman that sang God Bless America at the 7th inning of a Yankee game.

We have rats. I have farms all around me. I am the only one who buys rat poison, fly traps, and fly stickers. I try to keep a few cats, but somebody near by is shooting and killing them. We hear guns going off all hours of the night, sounds like right in our bedroom. How can we put a stop to our cats disappearing, our cats are wounded and found dead and injured. We need help with the rats from the farms. Please give us some kind of advice on what to do. I don’t think it’s right to kill animals just because you have guns and want to kill something. I think mental health needs to help them.

~

Can somebody help me? I have called all kinds of people I can think of, but maybe I haven’t called the right one. Our creek took away so much of the bank it now has a corner of the garage hanging in mid air. We need help. We need to know whose job it is, what to do; the whole garage is hanging in midair.

To the person that thinks country people are more considerate, that’s a nice fantasy. When people from the city move in across the street and burn their wet plastic garbage, race 4-wheelers and dirt bikes without mufflers up and down the road all day, yelling expletives at you that are mean spirited, hateful and inconsiderate rude people that are terrorizing the whole neighborhood, it will turn your life into a living hell and don’t call in telling me to call the cops. My neighbor called and they did nothing, I repeat, NOTHING! It only made things worse. Now they think they are untouchable, and I guess they are. There are low class people all over, now more than ever.

Now that hunting season is here, if your husband or someone in your family hunts, please remind them that up between Lisle Road and Beecher Road there is a lot of posted property and it is not okay to just go wandering through and hunting on someone’s property without their permission. We don’t come to other people’s houses and take liberty with their property. So please let people know it’s not appreciated.

I would be interested to hear from folks via this column who live in Owego who have not received gift cards that have been sent in the mail and what, if anything can be done about it. I am missing two and I don’t know how to recover them or the value if they have not been sent with any insurance.

I think the community owes Bruce Nelson a huge thank you for his generosity in having so many open houses during the construction of the Gateway Project. It has been enjoyable to sample the cuisine of local eateries while being amazed at the progression of the construction of a very difficult project. To build a structure with the constraints of two existing buildings on either side, the river and negligible access and room for equipment in the back, and a busy sidewalk/street in the front is nothing short of miraculous. It looks outstanding, compliments the neighborhood, structurally supports the other buildings on River Row and keeps the flow of foot traffic constant along the shops, west to east, while adding retail and housing. Thank you Nelson Associates and best wishes!
