Spalding Foundation to host Shangri-la and Chemung Racers Reunion

Fans of the original Shangri-la Speedway and Chemung Speedrome will be treated to a night of nostalgia as part of this year’s running of the Rod Spalding Classic for the Race of Champions Modified Series, as former drivers, car owners, and officials from both facilities will gather for a “Racers Reunion” at the Chemung Speedrome on Aug. 4.

The reunion is being presented by the Spalding Foundation for Injured Drivers, Inc. with support from Simmons-Rockwell, Midstate Basement Authorities, “Friends of John Cederborg”, and the Race of Champions organization.

The reunion guest list features legends of local asphalt racing from both speedways, including George Kent, Brett Bodine, Graeme Bolia, Randy Hedger, Billy Griffin, Ron Shepherd, Frank Chapman, Jim Zacharias, and many more. Over 60 former drivers, car owners and officials plan to be on hand.

In addition to a full card of Race of Champions Modified and Super Stock racing, the night’s festivities will include a meet and greet and autograph session with past drivers, a number of antique cars on display, and a silent memorabilia auction with proceeds benefiting the Spalding Foundation. Cash, checks, and credit cards are acceptable for auction purchases. The Foundation has also published a commemorative event program that will be available for purchase throughout the night.
