Depot Series returns to Newark Valley

This summer will mark the 15th season of live performances at the old railroad station in Newark Valley. The first in the series will be a return performance by The Tarps, on Friday, June 1. This classic rock and roll band, led by Danny Scott on guitar and vocals, hails from the Ithaca area and is known for their enthusiastic performance of rock and roll music from the 50’s thru the 80’s, including Bill Haley, Billy Joel, Neil Diamond, Little Richard and Elvis, among others. They play the songs you will recognize and sing along with.

June 8 will bring Rick Marsi, columnist, author and naturalist, to the Depot to present a program entitled “A Rain Forest Walk”. Choosing photos from Costa Rica, Belize, Trinidad, Argentina, Ecuador and Mexico, Rick takes you from the lowest Amazonian rain forest to the highest Andean cloud forest. Along the way, he shows award-winning photos of scarlet macaws, resplendent quetzals, howler monkeys and dugout canoes. Through this program, Rick will help you better understand the complexity of the tropical forests and why they are worth preserving.

On June 15, Amy Dickinson, a syndicated American newspaper Columnist with “Ask Amy,” author of “Strangers Tend to Tell Me Things” and “The Mighty Queens of Freeville” will be at the Depot. Amy grew up on a dairy farm in Freeville, N.Y. and she is a regular panelist on NPRs “Wait, Wait don’t Tell me.” She has lived in New York City, Washington D.C., London and Chicago. She is the author of three books, the latest her new memoir – “Strangers Tell Me Things.”

The Depot in Newark Valley is located on Depot Street, and the doors open on Friday evenings at 6 p.m. with entertainment kicking off at 7 p.m. Admission is free and refreshments are available.
