Brothers for the Cross, a faith-based men’s group associated with the Apalachin United Methodist Church (UMC) and a local chapter of the United Methodist Men (UMM), along with other local partner churches, presented a donation in the amount of $200 on Oct. 19 to the Park Terrace Food Pantry, within the Park Terrace Community United Methodist Church building located at 30 Glann Rd. in Apalachin, N.Y.

John Calkins, UMM Brothers for the Cross president, commented, “This contribution today is just another way that we can help our community and families in need.”

The UMM held a successful car show in June of this year and has distributed fundraising proceeds to several other organizations to include Kali’s Klubhouse at Fargnoli Farms, the Society of St. Andrew, the Apalachin Fire Department for their support of using the Field Day grounds for the car show, as well as Lourdes Hospital, for assisting cancer patients with travel expenses and Truth Pharm, which supports families and addicts of opioid addiction.

The Park Terrace Food Pantry, an agency of the Food Bank of the Southern Tier, has been in operation since 2004. A dedicated group of volunteers pick up food donations on a regular schedule and keep shelves stocked with canned and boxed items, along with refrigerated and frozen choices. In addition to the Food Bank of the Southern Tier, the Park Terrace pantry receives items from local community donations, CHOW and Weis Markets in Endicott.

Food Pantry volunteer Larry Brearley explained that the pantry supports a designated area and is open every Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Brearley added that while the number of families who visit changes each week, a recent Saturday brought in about 15 families, which in turn helped feed approximately 60 people.

For information about the Park Terrace Food Pantry, call (607) 625-4134. The pantry is currently reaching out to the community regarding Thanksgiving basket sign-ups. Baskets will be available for pick-up on Nov. 18 during regular Saturday hours.

The UMM welcomes men to attend monthly meetings held the first Thursday of the month at 8:30 a.m. at the Blue Dolphin restaurant located on Rte. 434 in Apalachin. All men are welcome and need not be of the Methodist faith to participate.

For questions or information, call the Apalachin UMC at (607) 625-2733.
