Readers’ Column for the week of Oct. 22, 2017

You may call the Owego Pennysaver Readers’ Column at (607) 687-2378 24-hours a day, or e-mail comments to readerscolumn@stny.rr.com. We reserve the right to revise or reject any message.

It is understood the OHPC believe that securing grants for Owego Village is the greatest possible thing. To buy or own a home in the Village of Owego and appear before the board of the OHPC and be told that the change or renovation, which would be good for your property and give you pride in your home, needs to be done the board’s way, or else you should not have bought the property if you could not afford the property. Therefore that is why more properties are deteriorating; brings down the value of resale and the tax level in the village, the OHPC FEELS THAT THEY ARE STRONGER AND BETTER THAN THE VILLAGE BOARD and the HOMEOWNERS in the village. They should be removed. The property owner can still apply to the State and Federal for grants, it just takes longer and they are sure nicer.

Regarding SUEZ planning for us to pay for the water main on Lake Street and a lot of other expenses. These are business expenses. If the air conditioner in my store dies, I am buying a new one out of my own money. Someone in this must stop this plan before it gets started. There must be someone to take Suez to task. Five to six years ago SUEZ bought up many small water companies across the state, Owego Water Works included. We were surcharged on each bill $4 to paint our water tank? A tank that never existed. A year ago I asked the Public Service Commission PSC to investigate and I am still working with them. Sent a letter to the Mayor for help, but he did not reply. Now the surcharge is down to $3 for tank maintenance.

If I’m reading this correctly, my quarterly water bill doesn’t include any profit, so when it comes time for upgrades to the water system the onus falls on the customers? Looks like a win-win situation for SUEZ Water.

Do you have a kid on the track team who could use hurdles to practice with at home? I have four to give away! Call 607 761-9387.

~

In response to the person looking to get an Elevation Certificate, Williams and Edsall Land Surveyors in Owego can do this. The number is 687-8953.

~

Just wondering, I thought the Owego Police Department was disbanding. Why are we getting requests for contributions to the Owego Police Association? Thanks for any information people could forward to this column.

~

I think the person who dies from an overdose is the one who should be charged with murder. Get the point?

~

Thank you Mr. B, the Nichols Cemetery looks great!

Isn’t it odd that HVAC installers can sell and install air source heat pump (minisplit units) because the customer wants air conditioning and not happen to mention that it also heats? Cold climate minisplit units heat down to minus 15 degrees so you don’t even need supplementary heat. This cuts your heating and cooling bills WAY down, and the good brands, Mitsubishi and Fujitsu, are very efficient. Yes, HVAC installers, the SAME unit meets all of a customer’s heating and cooling needs. You know that, right?

As those with food allergies cannot sign up for Holiday boxes, it would be more helpful if the dates the food pantries that were open in November and December were posted rather than the dates they are closed. This would be appreciated.

~

Voters in the Town of Owego, we need to fix the problems within the Town of Owego Highway Department. Out current superintendent will not even return phone calls. We have an opportunity to elect a new superintendent on Election Day. Please get out and vote.

~

I think a proper question to ask of commentators in the historical preservation debate is “Have you personally had to deal with the commission about your property?” Then you will have a better feeling on how to consider their comments.

~

Voters in the Town of Candor, remember that when going to the polls on Nov. 7 you will be able to Write-In your vote for “Bob Riggs” at the bottom of the column for Town Supervisor. Mr. Riggs originally came to the position as Town Supervisor with a Write-In vote and is on record saying he would accept and serve if elected for the next two-year term after losing the Republican Primary endorsement. If you believe he has earned another term, and to stay the course with improved infrastructure, balanced budgets, new town barn (twice), and equipment purchases with no tax increases, then pass this on of using a Write-In.

~

I’m glad we had all our priorities straight here in Broome County. We closed the Broome Developmental Center and displaced our special needs citizens only to reopen the center as a drug addiction rehab center. Nice going Broome County!

~

Thank you to the road crew who re-painted the center stripe on Glenmary Drive, on Sunday. Due to heavy fog this morning, it is VERY MUCH APPRECIATED!

~

I really missed the Tioga County Business Show this year. I see they did tailgating with businesses. I hope next year they go back to letting the community come and see the businesses, not just business people meeting with each other. Bring back the business show!

~

Kans For A Cure is collecting your returns to benefit Traci’ s Hope. We are collecting for the whole month of October. Donations can be dropped off at Shelly’s Redemption Center in Tioga Center or A&S Redemption Center in Owego. Our goal is 100,000.

I’d like to know where the cops are when these idiots drive 40 in a 55 mph. They are just as dangerous, I would say more dangerous than a speeder.

~

With all the negatives comments put in this paper I’d like to say something positive for a change. A big thumbs up for the Newark Valley Varsity field hockey team. What started out as a real slow season, which looked like they had little chance of success, turned out extremely well. They ended up winning their last four games. They beat Marathon twice. Big thumbs up, you are a lot of fun to watch!

~

I would like to know who is responsible for the railroad tracks next to Yetter’s garage in Newark Valley, north of the high school and on Brown Road. These need to be fixed; they should have been fixed long, long ago. I’d love to send a bill for my bearings and shocks to whoever is responsible for this. The locals know enough to slow way down, sometimes to 20 mph and it still rattles your car. Please, somebody get on this, whoever is responsible!

~

I see we finally got someone running for Highway Superintendent for the Town of Owego. He wasn’t educated by DOT like the one we’ve got. This individual, I’m pretty sure, knows the difference between a highway and roads. They might even upgrade some of the dirt roads that haven’t been done in eight years.

~

A huge thank you to the Tioga County Highway Department for painting the lines on Glenmary Drive. I drive that road seven days a week between 5 and 5:30 a.m. It makes a tremendous difference with the lines! Thank you, thank you, thank you!

~

I have a couple observations after watching the public hearing for the Owego Historic Preservation Commission. It seems like most of the problems stem from homeowners who don’t follow the building code and also the building code not being strictly enforced by the village.

~

Anyone in the Newark Valley area who wants to get rid of scrap metal can do so by leaving a message at (607) 237-1629.

~

I attended the Glass Menagerie last Sunday performed by the Ti-Ahwaga Players. It was a 20-year repeat for Jane Nichols and she looked more stellar than years ago and has even improved upon the character recently. The performance was breathtaking, exhausting as to how much had to be perceived by the audience in the trauma and the life. Thank you so much! We appreciate what you do for the community and you are, Jane, a legend in your own time.

~

Regarding the Village of Owego, the most over staffed, poorly managed, over regulated, nothing going on village in Central New York. Among the most expensive sewer and water in the U.S. Don’t need the ineffective, headlight out chasing police department. They should extend the village to include retail, car dealers, hotels, and factories on the south end of the village.

Can anyone please tell me what good leave blowers are besides just kicking up dust and making noise?

National Political Viewpoints

The New York Times sat on the Harvey Weinstein story for 13 years before publishing it. Typical liberal bias. Weinstein contributed millions of dollars to the Socialist Democrats. Now Hillary says she was shocked and disgusted at the accusations of sexual misconduct and criminality and that she was surprised. People were wondering if she was referring to Harvey or maybe Bill.

~

Hillary is married to Bill, she is a close contact to Anthony Weiner and she’s best friends with Harvey Weinstein, who donated a lot of money to her in her campaign. Wow, and she says she is for fair treatment of women and has the audacity to go after Trump?

~

I believe if there is a lack of knowledge about Hillary Clinton, it is intentional because 99 percent of the American people do not want to know her or learn anything more about her inefficiencies and her failures.

~

It looks like deja vu all over again with Harry Weinstein and all the women. It wasn’t long ago we went through all that with Trump. Nothing was done then so Weinstein will probably go scott free.

~

Here we go again! Another really wealthy man being attacked, yes I said attacked by these female wannabes. Twenty-eight years old and she says I never saw anything like that before. Well come on, think of us women who are 28 years old and had seven kids by the time we were 28 years old, married, yes married to a man and did not put ourselves in that predicament. They put themselves in that predicament. They are not 15 year old, immature females.

~

Ex-President Barack Obama’s oldest daughter interned for Harvey Weinstein for a while. They always have such great friends.

~

Bill and Hillary Clinton at one time had a home next to Harvey Weinstein’s in the Hamptons. The Clinton’s always pick out bad people to hang out with. They are the champions for women’s rights.

~

Congratulations to our courageous and brilliant President Trump for forcing congress to rewrite the ridiculous Iranian deal where nobama bribed the Iranians with planeloads of cash, actually hundreds of millions of dollars and received virtually nothing in return. Trump also drove another stake into the heart of the boondoggle known as Obamacare by eliminating nobama’s subsidizing of a few large insurance companies. Trump is a genius because it’s tough to fight the Marxist Democrats AND the elite old guard Republican rhinos both at the same time.

~

I wish Hillary would quit blaming others and simply take on the responsibility herself for losing the election. Thank God we now have a president who takes responsibility.

~

What’s worse than being Democrat Communist, I say nothing! The Democrats are so stupid they still don’t realize or accept they lost the election and Trump is our great Commander in Chief. Afraid of Democrats? That is delusional! We Conservatives laugh and pity the dysfunctional loons. Even funnier is the obviously simple minded concept of Democrats not coveting money. Look at the Clinton Foundation. Hillary outspent Trump about three to one! Apparently there are enough rich morons to support Democrats. The Trump revolution is just getting started. Stay tuned patriots and join the new wave.

~

Donald Trump is crazy! You need to pay attention!

~

So they found nothing with the Russian investigation regarding the Trump administration. Funny, the story just stopped being reported, it just went away. Why can’t the mainstream media admit their mistakes? No, they don’t have the nerve. This is not what I would call true journalism. Now let’s see if they report on the Iranian deal that Obama and Clinton made with Russia. Somehow I think not and then millions were sent to the Clinton Foundation.

~

So now we know there really was a Russian connection. Vlidimir Putin got 20 percent of America’s uranium and the Clinton Foundation got hundreds of thousands if not millions of dollars as well as kickbacks, bribes and schemes to enrich both nobama and the Clinton’s. The Marxist Democrat chickens have truly come home to roost!

~

A Catholic Republican says there is a moron in the White House. What’s wrong with that? He was smart enough to beat the Viet Nam draft, he was smart enough to beat some business bankruptcies, he came out on top as the leader of the Republican Party. What more could you ask for?

~

Isis has lost 87 percent of their controlled territory. The mainstream media and the fake news will not cover this story because it’s a huge accomplishment for the Trump administration. Thank you Mr. Trump, Obama could not do this in eight years!

~

Washington Republicans insist that their trickle down tax cuts will trickle down as money in our pocket. It’s never worked before. Ask the folks in Kansas who are buried in red ink in their budget as a result of massive tax cuts. History shows the foolishness of repeating the same old game over and over. The millionaires do benefit however.

~

Following a long-standing tradition, British Prime Minister May invited President Trump for a state visit when she visited Washington. Since that time she, and her government, have been trying to find a way to rescind the invitation without harming U.S. and British relations. The President is highly unpopular among all of our European allies. The invitation from France was extended before the election and the French were shocked by the outcome. It seems that only Saudi Arabia and Israel have positive feelings about Donald Trump.

~

Of course Hillary won’t give back money received from Harvey Weinstein, nor will any of the other holier than thou Libs. By the way did you see Chucky Schumer in the picture behind Weinstein? Think he’ll give it back? Hah! Yeah, really!
