Owego Boys Basketball to open next season in Atlanta

Owego Boys Basketball to open next season in Atlanta

In November of 2017 the Owego Free Academy (OFA) Boys Varsity Basketball team will be embarking on a season-opening excursion to Atlanta. There they will be participating in the first annual Craig Sager Memorial Basketball Tournament.

Craig Sager is the former NBA announcer / reporter who recently died from Leukemia. Sager was a beloved figure in both the Atlanta area and throughout the nation. OFA Basketball looks forward to honoring his legacy.

With currently four different Cancer Organizations on board (as well as Foot Locker and Nike) this tournament aims to bring more awareness to cancer, cancer treatment, and the organizations available to serve. All proceeds will go to the Lymphoma and Leukemia Society of Atlanta; however, there are also plans for a blood drive and a mass appeal for donations to the national Bone Marrow Registry.

Owego coach Chris Evans, stated, “This trip isn’t only about basketball; it’s about an educational opportunity that for some of our kids will be life-changing. Some of our student athletes have never been out of New York. This is an opportunity to not only become an ambassador in the fight against cancer, but to also learn a lot about each other and themselves. We want to thank this amazing community for their generous support so far.”

The team is currently soliciting donations to help offset the costs of this trip. In fact, they held their first fundraiser at the Owego Kitchen. With many generous donations the team is off to a rousing start.

They will be playing three games during the weekend and the first few weekdays prior to Thanksgiving 2017. If you would like to help, please reach out to Laura Wasyln (Booster Club representative) at lawasyln@gmail.com. Checks can be made out to “OFA Sports Booster Club” and sent to OFA Sports Boosters, c/o Owego Free Academy, 1 Sheldon Guile Blvd., Owego, N.Y. 13827. Please note on bottom of check that if is for “Atlanta Basketballl trip.”

OFA Basketball looks forward to holding other fundraisers over the summer.
