On National Trails Day, June 3, hikers, bikers, runners, and lovers of the outdoors will gather at 9 a.m. to explore and help with stewardship projects at Waverly Glen Park and Two Rivers State Park in Waverly.
The theme of this event is Bring the Map to Life! In May, volunteers came to the parks to celebrate “I Love My Park Day,” a statewide event organized by New York State Parks, and used digital mapping software provided by the Carantouan Greenway, a local environmental organization, to create a digital trail map of both parks.
On National Trails Day, volunteers will have an opportunity to Bring the Map to Life by helping to mark the trails that were mapped on I Love My Park Day. Waverly Glen Park and Two Rives State Park are adjacent and have a shared trail system.
“Having a well-organize and clearly marked trail system is very important to experiencing both parks,” said Victoria Srnka, Two Rivers State Park supervisor.
Currently, the trails are marked by different groups of park users with different markers. “We love to know people are using the parks, but it gets very confusing and can even be a safety issue for people not as familiar with the park,” Srnka said.
According to Srnka, a map will be available in the near future and park users will find more information on the “Two Rivers State Park” Facebook page when the project is complete. Park users should avoid marking their own trails and use the new map and uniform trail system to maintain a safe and fun trail experience.
Other projects for National Trails Day at Waverly Glen Park and Two Rivers State Park are general maintenance and placing birdhouses throughout the park.
The birdhouses were painted by children during “I Love My Park Day” in May.
