Six Owego Free Academy (OFA) graduating seniors were recently presented with higher education scholarships honoring local families through the Charles H. Bassett (CHB) Youth Foundation.

Jessica Jones and Jake Zlinsky were awarded the 2017 Eudora and Fred Shuler Family Scholarship at a ceremony on Friday, May 19 at the Bassett Ah-Wa-Ga Center in Owego.

Eudora Shuler, and her sons Bill and Jim and daughter-in-law Margaret, were present and shared some of the unique and early history of their family, its accomplishments, their love for Owego and encouraged the students to do their best and make contributions everywhere they go.

Erin and Jake were recognized for excellence in academics, balanced development, and the desire to seek opportunities in the field of nursing, health sciences, animal sciences or medical services.

Bella Coleman and Dylan Feliciano have received the 2017 Louise and Robert Woodburn Family Scholarship.

Bella and Dylan were honored for their outstanding selfless service to the Owego community. Louise Woodburn, and her sons Bob and David, presented Coleman and Feliciano with their scholarship certificates surrounded by parents and friends.

Some of the Woodburn family’s long history of service to the community and 50 year legacy of the Woodburn Store was shared and the students were encouraged to keep serving others throughout their lives.

Erin Thalacker and Carla Budrow were presented with the 2017 David P. Beere Family Scholarship for excellence in volunteer service to one’s community.

Given in honor of David Beere, his parents and three sisters who all graduated from Owego Free Academy, this scholarship recognizes the extraordinary life and contributions of Owego native son, Dave Beere, who recently turned 99 years young in his current home in Portland, Oregon – where he is still actively engaged in the international shipping business, which has been his life’s work.

Beere retains his strong Owego ties through the Owego Elks Lodge and CHB Youth Foundation and is enshrined in the International Shipping Hall of Fame as well as the Wall of Fame at Owego Free Academy.

The Bassett Foundation in a release, stated, “Congratulations to these fine students, their proud parents and the many Owego school teachers and counselors who have given them such a fine education and foundation for life.”
