Two Owego hikers were assisted out of a ravine after one fell in

On Jan. 12, 2017, at about 4:33 p.m., New York State Police from Owego responded to a Tioga County 911 report of a woman asking for help in the area of 44 Swartlick Rd. in the Town of Tioga.

Troopers quickly determined that the woman requesting assistance had walked up to a local falls near 44 Swartlick Rd., and now needed assistance getting back.

Kimberly M. Craft, age 48 of Owego, N.Y., was hiking with Ronald Benson, age 39, also from Owego, N.Y., near the local falls when she slipped and fell into a ravine approximately 60’ down. During the fall Kimberly was injured and was unable to walk or climb back out of the ravine.

Responding troopers located the two hikers with the assistance of their daughter who frequents the falls and was familiar with the area.

With the inter-agency cooperation of the New York State Police, Tioga Center Fire Department and The Owego Fire Department, the hikers were assisted out of the ravine.

Both were transported by Tioga Center EMS to Robert Packard Hospital for mild hypothermia, while Kimberly was treated for an ankle injury.
