Tioga County Sheriff’s Office delivers over 1,000 pounds of unused medication to Syracuse

On Wednesday, Oct. 26, the Tioga County Sheriff’s Office, assisted by the Waverly Police Department and the Endicott Police Department, delivered over 1,100 pounds of unused and unwanted prescription and non-prescription medications to an incinerator facility in Syracuse for destruction.

The total amount destroyed included items collected from medication drop boxes at the Tioga County Sheriff’s Office and Waverly Police Department, as well as drug take back events held by the above-mentioned agencies and the Owego Police Department and the Spencer Police Department since May 2016.

The destruction, of these unused and unwanted medications, was made possible by working closely with the Drug Enforcement Administration’s (DEA) Syracuse Office. Tioga County is a part of the DEA’s Central New York region.

The DEA estimated a total of just over 10 tons of medications were destroyed which were collected from the DEA’s Central and Capital regions. The DEA estimated that the street value of the controlled substances contained within that 10 tons of medications was over $10 million.

The Tioga County Sheriff’s Office is proud to work with these local, state and federal agencies to get these medications off the street and out of the hands of those that could abuse them.
