A check in the amount of $2,500 was presented to the Tioga County Rural Ministry (TCRM) on Oct. 4 at VFW Post 1371 in Owego, N.Y. The check, which represents proceeds from the VFW’s third annual golf tournament held on Sept. 18, benefits the Rural Ministry’s annual holiday food giveaway.
On hand to present the check to TCRM Executive Director, Sister Mary O’Brien, was Louie Striley, president of the VFW Men’s Auxiliary; Alycia Haus, TCRM Board of Directors member; Ralph Tapia, VFW commander; and Dave Bensley, VFW quartermaster.
Tapia thanked the members of the VFW, including the men’s auxiliary and Vietnam Veterans’ of America, as well as sponsors and donors.
Tapia also expressed a special acknowledgement to Haus and Bensley, whom he said were instrumental in the planning and work that made the tournament a success.
More than 22 local businesses and individuals sponsored a hole for the golf tournament and 23 other individuals and businesses were either donors or door prize donors.
“It’s a marvelous gift and more than what was anticipated,” Sister Mary stated, and explained that the money will help upwards of 250 people this year.
Haus commented, “We hope next year it will be even bigger.”
