Penzance Pirates come ashore July 11 at BU

The Summer Savoyards will present Gilbert and Sullivan’s beloved comic operetta, The Pirates of Penzance, July 11 and 12 at 7:30 p.m. and on July 13 at 3 p.m. at the Anderson Center for the Performing Arts at Binghamton University.

The Savoyards are in their 65th season of performing G&S in Broome County.

In Pirates, a young man’s erroneous apprenticeship to a pirate, not a pilot, leads to comic and romantic confusion, complicated by a band of bumbling pirates and an even more bumbling squad of policemen.

The much-parodied and appropriated score includes “I am the very model of a modern Major-General” and the original lyrics to what is best known now as “Hail, hail, the Gang’s All Here.”

The production is headed by Julia Adams, stage director; Kelly Roggenkamp, musical director; and Matthew Vavalle, conductor. All three also have performed onstage with the Savoyards.

The cast is headed by Zach Curtis (Major-General Stanley), H. Scot Saggiomo (Pirate King), Kenny Roggenkamp (Frederic), Taylor Hagquist (Mabel), Jaron K. Johnson (Sergeant of Police), and Emma Jones (Ruth).

Performances will feature a full orchestra, fanciful sets, and sumptuous costumes.

General admission tickets are $30 (65 and over: $25; 18 and under: FREE).

Tickets are available through the Anderson Center box office, (607) 777-ARTS (2787) or at www.summersavoyards.org.
