On Tuesday, June 14, Sabrina Henriques, president and CEO of Tioga County’s Chamber of Commerce was host to a ribbon cutting ceremony that officiated the return of Owego’s Strawberry Festival, held June 17-18 in downtown Owego.
Pat Hansen, the festival’s founder, took the lead in Saturday’s parade, serving as Grand Marshal. A well-deserved title for this year’s parade, 2022 marks her 40th year of coordinating and chairing the annual event.
The event was forced to cancel in 2020 and 2021 because of the pandemic, and Hansen is over the top that the festival reached its 40th year, a “Strawberry Jubilee” – the 2022 Festival Theme.
At the ribbon cutting ceremony on Tuesday, members of the Historic Owego Marketplace, the merchant association that is host to the annual event, was present to talk about their efforts to highlight downtown Owego and all that the downtown merchants and area businesses have to offer.
Pat Hansen was also presented a gift following the ribbon cutting, a Strawberry stool. The festival’s newest sponsors, the Beautiful Barn Venue in Candor, N.Y., offered up the gift to Hansen as a token of their appreciation for her efforts.
Mandy Neira, the president of HOM, as well as Wendy Post and Pat Hansen, co-chairs of the festival, had an opportunity to share news about the Friday and Saturday event with various media outlets that arrived to help get the word out.
