Tioga County CROP Hunger Walk set for October 20

Tioga County CROP Hunger Walk is described, by its organizers, as “The heart and sole of Tioga County.” It is the only event that brings together members of our county, young and old, all faiths and walks of life for a common goal – to end hunger, one step at a time.

This year’s CROP Hunger Walk is planned for Oct. 20, with registration beginning at 1:30 p.m. This year will also mark the 50th Anniversary of CROP Hunger Walks in the United States.

CROP Hunger Walks are making a big difference worldwide, including ensuring that more children reach their fifth birthday, teaching sustainable ways to grow food, and providing additional sources of food and income to families facing extreme challenges.

Additionally, the Tioga County CROP Hunger Walk will support the efforts of six local food pantries in Tioga County to eradicate hunger in our communities. The pantries include Bread for Life Pantry in Candor, Catholic Charities / Tioga Outreach, Lounsberry Food Pantry, Spencer-Van Etten Food Pantry, Tioga County Rural Ministry, and Allied Christians of Tioga, which provides a free dinner weekly in Owego.

The walk begins at St. Patrick’s Church, located at 300 Main St. in Owego, with registration from 1:30 to 2 p.m. There is a 1-mile and 2.5-mile walk. The walks will end at the First Presbyterian Union Church, located on the corner of North Avenue and Temple Street. The local marching band, “Purple Lightning,” will provide spirited, upbeat music for the beginning of the walk, which steps off at 2 p.m. Enjoy refreshments with neighbors at the end of the walk.

The Village Board of Owego has declared Oct. 20 CROP Hunger Walk Day in Owego. The Village has been a part of the CROP Hunger Walk since 1980, raising over $331,013.90 in our county in the fight against hunger.
