Boys and Girls Club announces changes to programs for children

Tioga County Boys & Girls Club recently announced they are going through some changes. While they enjoy the ability to offer a variety of adult program and events, their number one mission is to serve the youth population of Tioga County.

As an organization, they have been reviewing and revamping their ability to serve children within certain age groups. Due to regulations put out by the New York State Office of Family and Children Services they will need to phase the ‘drop-in hours’ for youth (12 and under) into a licensed childcare program.

What does this mean for kids? Going forward the club will be required to classify children in one of the two categories, age 13 and up or age five to 12 years old. They will then enroll the child for the age appropriate program (school age childcare or teen program).

Currently, the club operates a licensed school age childcare program, or SACC program, referred to as CLUB POSITIVE in the Owego Elementary School building. This offers weekly afterschool childcare for parents within the OACSD community.

Any children, under the age of 12 years old that were using the club’s ‘drop in’ services for the 2018-19 school year will have the option of enrolling into this program, given all required paperwork has been completed. Please note they may have a temporary wait list due to the restructuring.

There will be multiple financial options for families to consider when enrolling; including weekly rates, childcare subsidies (which they will assist with) and a variety of scholarships. For future growth, the Club is planning to offer a licensed SACC location at the Club to serve children as well.

During this time of evolution, they will be operating the 201 Erie St. location from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily for adult members; no youth member activities or services will be provided temporarily at this location.

The youth athletic seasons, camps and family and community events will continue to take place as they have in years’ past. They are hoping to set open hours for teens (13 and older) in the near future at the main complex on Erie Street.

If you are in need of childcare for any students currently 12 years old or younger, consider enrolling them into the SACC Program, Club Positive. Children from OES, AES and OAMS may sign up. Enrollment papers and information can be picked up at the 201 Erie St. location.
