The Tioga County Soil and Water Conservation District hosted this year’s annual Southern Tier Regional Envirothon in conjunction with Broome, Chemung, Tompkins, and Schuyler Counties Soil and Water Conservation Districts.
Students were tested on a wide variety of subjects including Aquatic Ecology, Forestry, Soils and Land Use, Wildlife, and Current Issues.
The event was hosted at the Tioga County Sportsman Association on April 25. Ten teams competed from Tioga County – two from Candor, three from Tioga Central and five from Newark Valley.
Candor Central School’s, Candor 400’s, won first place for Tioga County and will advance to the New York State Envirothon, planned for May 22 and 23 at Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva, N.Y. The Candor 400’s also won the regional title for this year’s Envirothon, meaning they scored the highest of all 32 teams that competed.
The National Competition this year will be held July 28 through Aug. 2, and will be held in Raleigh, N.C. at the North Carolina State University.
Every year they encourage all the Tioga County schools to participate in the competition and hope that the other school districts will attend next year. For more information on signing your school district up for next year, contact Alex Marks by calling 687-3553 or by email to Marksa@co.tioga.ny.us.
They would like to thank the 2019 sponsors – Mead Farm LLC, F.S. Lopke, Jochum Logging, Hiawatha Island Boat Club, Town of Owego, RB Contracting, and Johnsons Pool’s and Spa’s.
