Animal Care Sanctuary (ACS) recently announced the kennel has been demolished at their East Smithfield, Pa. facility. The original structure was built in 1984 and was built to house 100 dogs. It had the center aisle with chain link kennel runs on both sides. While state of the art at the time, today we know the environment for dogs needs to be much different.
The new kennel will have indoor/outdoor runs with solid walls so the dogs cannot see each other and the noise level will be significantly reduced. They will not look across at another dog but instead there will be a wide aisle where potential adopters and volunteers can visit the dogs. There will be a separate unit for medical runs and intake runs for new admissions. The capacity will allow for 24 dogs and today ACS is adopting an average of 25 dogs per month, so most dogs are going to their forever homes within 14 days. That allows us to save many more lives each year.
The demolition included removing all the old copper and metal for recycling and the concrete will be placed on the property where they have deep, wet areas, and dirt and topsoil will be placed on top.
The top end of the kennel will also house a new community veterinary clinic. ACS was fortunate to have a mobile home on the property that is used for providing spay/neuter and wellness services to the public, but they have outgrown it and need additional space for dog and cat recovery and exam rooms.
ACS is a regionally based shelter with national reach and adopted out 694 animals in 2018. The clinic cared for 4,909 pets in 2018. Along with owner surrenders, ACS assists other local shelters when they are over capacity. ACS also accepts dogs from the south and responds as an emergency placement partner when tragedy occurs throughout the country.
The project is over 2 million dollars with over half now raised. They are opening the campaign to the public for contributions to the kennel and clinic. Donations can be given through their website, animalcaresanctuary.org, by check, or through text-to-give 77948 – give2-acs.
ACS is celebrating its 52nd year as a no kill not for profit organization.
