New York State passes election reforms

Governor Cuomo recently signed into law several bills bringing important changes to New York State Election Law. State and Local Primary Elections will now be held on the fourth Tuesday of June, in order to coincide with Federal Primaries and thereby saving taxpayer dollars. The Primary Election this year will be on June 25.

As a result, petition season is nearly upon us, with petition-signing beginning on Feb. 26.

Starting with this year’s General Election on Nov. 5, registered and eligible voters will be able to vote during an early voting period. This early voting period will take place at a designated early voting site, starting on the 10th day prior to any election and ending on (and including) the 2nd day prior to the election.

The early voting site in Tioga County is to be determined.

These reforms will also make it easier for young people to register to vote by allowing for the pre-registration of 16-year-olds beginning in 2020, and requiring boards of education to promote student voter registration and pre-registration.

Additionally, beginning March 25, 2019, if a resident of New York State who is registered to vote moves anywhere else in the state, they will no longer have to re-register to vote. Their registration and party affiliation will remain intact and be transferred by their previous board of elections to the board of elections in the county of their new residence.
