Readers’ Column for the week of February 24, 2019

You may call the Owego Pennysaver Readers’ Column at (607) 687-2378 24-hours a day, or e-mail comments to readerscolumn@stny.rr.com. We reserve the right to revise or reject any message.

Does anybody have any idea why the Floyd L. Maine arena in Binghamton is no longer having rock and roll concerts? Please respond; talk about the day rock and roll died.

~

I see the Town of Union has their recyclers collect returnable bottles and cans on a daily basis. I wonder how many more municipalities do this and how does it benefit the taxpayers. It seems like an interesting concept to have them save money this way. Any response will be appreciated.

~

In regards to the cats being found in Nichols, here’s the real black and white of it all, whether it’s a stray cat or a pet cat, which all of these have been pet cats, no cat deserves to be found in a pool. That is just terrible and if you think that is correct, think again.

~

Attention Town of Tioga taxpayers, let it be known that the bill you receive in the mail may contain different figures than the receipt you get at the office when you pay your tax bill. Please check your figures carefully because we are having ours investigated.

~

This is a shout out to John’s Market on North Avenue. Thank you for the lovely red carnation I received on Valentines Day, as did many others. It brought such a smile to my face and so many others as I saw them carrying their carnations around Owego. It was a lovely thought for a chilly winter day and a bright spot in our community.

This is for all the folks who seem to be tax professionals and know it alls. In regards to people getting less of a refund this year in their 2018 taxes that have to pay. My suggestion is, get your 2017 W-2 form, the one you use to file the taxes for 2017, and compare to the W-2 form you use to file your 2018 taxes. Look at the amount of federal tax you paid in. You’ll find in most cases you paid less federal tax for the W-2 form you are using to fill out the 2018 tax return. Therefore, if you’re getting less that’s probably the reason. If you owe you probably never went back and adjusted your W-2 form like everybody was told to do so you have the proper amount taken out of your taxes.

~

This is for the person who called in about the robo calls in last week’s column, and mentioned how to stop robo calls on our iPhones, androids and even landlines. Most landlines you can call your phone company and they will take care of it; also it said you enter the number 77, you hear 3 beeps and then hang up. Any callers that try this number will be rejected. I would try your carrier first and they can block the calls you do not want.

~

Does anyone know where you can find a large public paper shredder that the public can use for free as I have a very large bag of papers that need shredding. That would be a great service if there is one out there.

~

Project 3T: It’s time to call your elected representative. Are you taking the test, opting out, or just ignoring the situation? All 235 are aware.

~

It sure is nice to have such a friendly and caring crew in Dunkin Donuts in Owego.

~

Two weeks ago at the Village Board Meeting it was said that there is an interested buyer for 90 Temple St., which is the police station and the court, for $150,000. Full market value on the village of Owego tax roles is $543,124, along with the parking lot next door – add another $41,000. They better think twice about taking a $150,000 offer. Business is business; don’t give away anything.

~

It amazes me how people are complaining in this column about not getting as much of a refund on their taxes. Do they realize that they are not getting back as much as they think because they had a lot less taken out of their paychecks last year.

~

I cannot believe people are complaining about getting a smaller tax refund. They just don’t get it. Don’t they realize their check amounts are larger? You’ve been getting that refund all year long!

~

I don’t care what sport you coach, when you assume a role as a coach, whether it’s from the pee wee level or right through high school, you are the role model for your athletes.

~

Just wondering if there is an objective and factual study that has been done regarding windmills. Such issues as noise pollution, wildlife habitat destruction, loss of atmosphere cleansing flora, cost of manufacture including materials and fuel used in the manufacturing process, cost of transport and set up including clearing and support pad installation, cost / effectiveness / longevity of storage batteries and equipment, cost of maintenance including maintaining access roads, personnel, replacement parts, tools and equipment, fuel for transportation back and forth to site and many other pieces that make up the workings of windmills – is this technology truly cost effective and ecologically sound at this particular point in time? Facts matter; do we have the complete information needed for communities to make a sound decision? Ditto solar panels.

I’ve Got A Hero

My hero is Bozo the Clown and Jussie Smollett.

~

My heroes are Tawana Brawley and Al Sharpton. They’re wonderful.

I think the I’ve Got a Hero section needs to be renamed to I Know a Clown, as the first two inductees were nothing but jokes.

~

Jeff Bezos (zillionaire and Amazon CEO) is our hero for February. He told New York, New York City, and the National Enquirer scoundrels to go back in their holes. In accordance with Cuomo’s New York and New York City values the extortionists wanted their tribute. Cuomo failed to coordinate (ensure) all parties (palms) were considered (greased). This is 100 percent the result of Cuomo’s thuggery. It must be nice to be rich.

National Political Viewpoints

Remember how the U.S. Coastguard did not receive their pay during the government shutdown? One message to all our brothers in arms, and I’m afraid the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines. I’m begging you not to forget the Coast Guard brothers. The Coast Guard is part of our military force. How the military could be supporting Trump after he screwed over the Coast Guard is mind blowing. Forget Trump, and remember the Coastguard. God bless our veterans, ones serving, ones that have served and ones who are under.

~

Don’t be shocked by the smaller than usual income tax return. You voted for him, you’ve got it. How’s that feel?

~

The circus has arrived in Washington D.C. The hen ringmaster is A.O.C., otherwise known as Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. If nothing else it’s providing some comic relief.

~

I pray that our governor would realize that abortion is not about children who might come into this world, but it’s about children who are already in the world living and growing in the womb and scheduled to be killed.

~

I wouldn’t want Governor Cuomo or any of the other people who voted for the terrible abortion bill to go to hell. I only pray that God will change their hearts.

~

There is too much arrogance and lying in the White House. I believe Stephen Miller runs Trump better than Ann Coulter did. It gives Trump more time to watch television.

~

To the person who would like to know where to get 2020 Trump hats, don’t waste your money. Wait until after the 2020 election and you can pick them out of the garbage.

~

So a reader called in and wants to have Nancy Pelosi as their hero? Get your head examined!

~

All politicians have a heart of gold. Some politicians have a heart of gold that is just as bright and just as bold. Some politicians have a heart of gold that is just as hard and just as cold.

~

You people in the NRA, do you know what’s going on with the organization at the top? Maybe you better look into it. Why are they getting hooked up with the Russians? Proven facts, do some fact checking. The NRA and the Russians have no business. You’re selling our country out to a foreign country and you claim you are patriots? Bull!

~

I think that Bernie Sanders is going to run for president in 2020. I wouldn’t want him for president. He would have everyone go on welfare and work at low paying fast food jobs. Go Trump!

~

Millions and millions and billions and billions and trillions and trillions. These words come out of Trump’s mouth repeatedly! I wish he would stay off the television. He just cannot speak intelligently.

~

The economic illiterates like Bozo O’Rourke, Colonial Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, and Ocasio Cortez promise everything free for all. Once again there ain’t no free lunch. Here’s a great idea. How about planning your life, getting a good education you can afford and taking care of yourself and your family? That our education system has produced such socialist idiots as the above requires a total revamp of what we are teaching to these skulls full of mush. We need to clean house and we need a much stronger capitalist based mentality. Go Trump!

~

Trump forever! Everyday new revelations assure us of a place of the 45th president in our presidential history ranks. The loser, Donald J. Trump, will be the unbeatable candidate as the worst president ever.

~

I hope all you Democrats can live with Amazon’s decision to not come to New York State. Call your democratic reps and give them a big thank you. This really shows the world we have idiot democrats running the New York State. Would any of these democrats have the drive to approach Amazon again? The Oakdale Mall would be a great location for Amazon to build but they won’t bother.

~

Hey you guys, you do realize, and I’m sure you all are really smart people, that when you have 10 people running under the democratic name, the votes are going to be divided 10 ways! If you only have two or three running, they will only be divided two or three ways. Now think about it, that sucker has got it all lined up, he knows numbers. That’s all he knows and lies out of the side of his mouth. Come on do yourselves a favor, do us a favor, do everybody a favor and get him the hell out!

~

Taxpayers complaining about their 1040 refund or lack or reduced refund have to ask themselves; Did you not adjust your W-4 withholding form last year when that piece of tax law was put into effect? You can’t have it both ways – in your pocket each week and again at the end of the year. What is killing your pocket book are the state taxes you pay in New York, (as is New Jersey, Illinois, California and Connecticut). Check out the majority of taxpayers in other states and how good it’s looking for them. Some have no state taxes and most do not let the state run a spend it now then tax it later nor do the solvent states take in revenue of additional taxing authorities or operate on the premise if it exists, tax it. Cuomo is putting down a budget April 1 that is pulling back AIM – Aid and Incentive for Municipalities already budgeted by all local governments to balance his state budget wherein he advanced (threw away) tax dollars and projected revenue of sales tax from the defunct Buffalo Billions; Syracuse Million and Up Start NY Millions programs which all went down the toilet with $0 to show for it. Even the fiasco of his I Love NY road signs and the building of all the new visitor centers have not shown a return on investment. If you think this year was bad, wait until next year when you get your Town/County and/or Village Tax bill and then see what the New York tax rate on income is going to be adjusted to. You’ll think the Federal bill is a “nothing burger”.

~

Yes, speaking of the crooked-crats, Hillary’s gang and the FBI upper echelon, that were complicit in protecting her and all the rest of them, I think it’s a big joke. I believe there should be another investigation going on at the same time as the Mueller investigation, going after Hillary’s gang. It’s a terrible thing when the once proud FBI stoops to politics. It seems Trump can do no right and they’re beautiful. Crooked Obama and crooked John Carey sending $1.5 billion in cash to Iran in the middle of the night on an airplane? Oh, the secrets they have! I think it’s about time all these misdeeds are exposed. I think the Fox Bureau of Investigation has done all the legwork for the FBI and the next investigation on the crooked-crats.

~

I’m a Republican who paid $189 more this year on my taxes than last year. However the form was so easy to fill out I was able to do it myself instead of paying $195 to do it. So in the end I am $6 to the good.

~

I can’t understand how a country can put down over 60 million young children. Maybe the U.N. can have the politicians responsible for all this action in front of the U.N. Court. How do you folks feel about this action? Please call in and put your feelings into this. There are over 60 million children being put down.

~

I don’t think that girl should get back in this country. She’s an Isis person and she better stay out because I don’t think she’d last around this town because that’s not right. I think old Trump should get his wall. You’ve got to keep those people out. What is the matter with those people in the White House that don’t want the wall to keep us safe? Look I think they should do something.

~

If you want to know the real story about the New Jersey house sales tax – Google it. The information posted last week is incorrect.

~

Typical. Ask why someone thinks the New York law can force a woman to have an abortion and we get a response about a North Carolina law where a woman makes a decision. Rational thought is missing in many places these days.

~

I’m a retired senior that just completed my 2018 federal taxes. I can confirm that I DID benefit by receiving a $1,245 (16 percent) reduction in federal taxes. Thanks President Trump!

~

As a proven person with Native American blood, I am disgusted with Elizabeth Warren running for President. She is a liar and a cheat, relying on heresy instead of proven fact to get to where she is today. She and Harvard University should offer a paid in full scholarship to a true Native American to make up for her stealing/taking the place of one by gross exaggeration. Then all queries regarding race on all applications should be eliminated. If we are all equal, quotas should no longer be necessary. Where does it stop? At some point in our history, Polish, Italian, Irish, German, Japanese, Chinese, etc. were all looked down upon, suffering stress and prejudice. Pick a date to end this nonsense.

~

Why does the U.S. allow foreign countries to have lobbyists in the U.S., like Israel? This explains why they are a favored nation and the U.S. will defend them before anyone else, we give them special treatment and money for more weapons. This should be outlawed; the U.S. taxpayers are supporting countries that are terrorist, killing innocent neighbors.

~

I just finished listening to Mr. Trump on CNN announcing the National Emergency Declaration. He said he didn’t have to go this route, but felt it was important. The definition of EMERGRENCY is an immediate issue. Not years after he promised the wall because of the caravans are coming, they’ve been coming for the last two years, and yet no sign of them. Mr. Trump is simply having a hissy fit because he didn’t get his way.

~

I’m old and remember the Commies would celebrate the anniversaries of the Commie revolution, May Day, Lenin’s B-day, etc. Last year was the 100th anniversary of the Commie Revolution and no one came to the party. Since 1918 Socialism has killed 110,000,000 outright. As in Venezuela today, starvation is the most popular mode of thought and over-population control. Do Ocasio-Cortez and her FREE STUFF gangs require we relearn this tragic lesson? If Venezuelans were flooding across our border, Dems would build the Wall in a moment. Long ago members of my family fled Communist Cuba; strangely we’re all conservative.

~

Don’t you love it? The Socialists offer NOTHING in the way of ideas or solutions; all they do is vote NO on everything and anything. Since they are obviously against accomplishing anything, why bother voting for them to get more of the same?

~

The only “National Emergency” this country has is Donald Trump. He could care less about you, our country and me. He calls his “National Emergency” and then goes off to Florida to play golf. What a joke!
