On Halloween, Community Bank, N.A., located in Nichols, N.Y., was handing out more than candy. Branch Manager Chad Smith, who recently moved to the branch from PS Bank in Sayre, Pa., presented Ryan Bombard, president of the Nichols / Tioga Little League with a check to assist in their field restoration and relocation efforts.

According to Bombard, approximately 35 tons of dirt is needed to move the ball fields at Kirby Park in Nichols.

“When the fields get wet three times a year, you need help,” said Bombard, adding, “the donation will help.

The staff at Community Bank, N.A. offered the donation to Nichols / Tioga Little League as part of a bank wide effort held Oct. 28 called “Good Neighbor Day.” According to Branch Manager Chad Smith, the effort takes place each year, with a different local organization chosen as its recipient. This year the bank chose little league in an effort to support area youth and to keep little league alive!

Smith, himself, helped his father-in-law, Steve Watkins, coach little league in Towanda, Pa. in the mid-nineties and currently serves as coach and treasurer for Athens Little League, an organization he has been involved with for over a decade. He played, as well, in Towanda.

Bombard has children of his own involved in little league, and coached Teener League in Montrose, Pa. for several years. He has been involved with Nichols / Tioga Little League for about ten years now.

Bombard stated that the work on the field will begin in the spring, and is grateful for the donation from their neighborhood bank.

“Glad they thought of us on this,” Bombard added.

Bombard is also the director for Tioga Youth Basketball, a program for youth kindergarten through sixth grade that takes place at Tioga Central School. The program began in September and runs through February.

A fundraiser for the basketball program is planned for Thursday, Nov. 29 in Tioga Central’s High School gym. The event will feature the “Harlem Wizards” and begins at 7 p.m.
