From the Mayor’s Desk

From the Mayor’s DeskContributed by Village of Owego Mayor Michael Baratta III

The seasons are changing and fall is setting in. I wanted to take some time and update you on what is going on with the village government. We have awarded the bids for phase 2 of the upgrades at the sewer plant. I am sure you have seen our new police car driving around town. There are a lot of fall events coming up in downtown Owego.

The Downtown Revitalization Initiative is underway. If you want more information or to submit an idea visit the Village of Owego webpage or stop in the clerk’s office or Economic Development, both have applications.

There is some major paving underway on Main Street, Church Street and Greene Street. I know this is a mess right now, but the end result will be nice.

Also, there is new gas line being run on Temple, Paige and East Temple, this is another cause for closed streets in the village; we did not plan this out to be at the same time. In the end we will have better infrastructure with some new gas mains running under our streets. Thank you for being patient and obeying the no parking signs during these projects.

Remember, as your leaves begin to fall or continue to, there is no need to bag them; if you rake them to the area between the curb and sidewalk the DPW can suck them up with our vacuum truck.

I have had some questions on Trick or Treating. This will happen on Oct. 31 in the village during reasonable hours. In the past, mainly after the flood, the village has regulated trick or treating and has done some trunk or treats. The village this year does not see a need for that. I do know there are various other organizations holding events in the coming weeks around Halloween.

Thank you to everyone who donated to my Real Men Wear Pink campaign to raise money and awareness for breast cancer. My pink hair is fading; it was fun though. If you are still interested in donating, you can contact me or visit http://main.acsevents.org/goto/mikebaratta. This is a great cause and various men throughout the southern tier were asked to help the cause. I am honored to help.

The Owego Police are setting up a neighborhood watch program, if you would like to be included you can contact the Owego Police Department by calling 687-2234 or let me know and I will get you added to the list.

As always, if you have anything of concern, please email me at Mayor-vofowego@stny.rr.com or call me at (607) 972-6034.
