Look homeward, Angel, especially if you have the voice of an angel, a voice described as “a broad, resonant baritone that is exquisitely controlled throughout [its] entire range.”  Zachary Lenox will be doing just that.

A 2005 graduate of Newark Valley High School, he will return home from Portland, Oregon, first to join other alumni to provide entertainment during the Newark Valley Alumni Association’s annual Alumni Concert planned for Saturday, Oct. 20, at 7 p.m. in the high school’s Jewel Bittner Griffith Auditorium; then to perform a full concert at the Newark Valley United Church of Christ, located at 32 S. Main St. in Newark Valley, on Sunday, Oct. 21 at 2 p.m.

Accompanied on piano by Endicott native John Isenberg on Sunday afternoon, Lenox will perform several arias and art songs, along with a couple of numbers from musical theatre. Among the opera arias he will sing “Toreador” from Bizet’s Carmen, “O du mein holder Abendstern” from  Wagner’s Tannhäuser and “Deh vieni alla finestra” from Mozart’s Don Giovanni.

Art songs will include Ravel’s “La-bas ver l’eglise” and “Tout gai!” from Cinq Mélodies populaires grecques, Schubert’s “Stänchen” and Vaughan Williams’ “The Vagabond.” And Lenox will enchant the audience with “Some Enchanted Evening” from South Pacific and “The Impossible Dream” from The Man of La Mancha.

Lenox has performed extensive concert and oratorio work, and has been a young artist at the Boston Early Music Festival, Hawaii Performing Arts Festival, Astoria Music Festival, Napa Music Festival, and the Toronto Summer Opera Workshop. He received his Masters in Vocal Performance from the Crane School of Music in 2012.

This past spring, Lenox made his debut with Portland Opera as Marullo in Verdi’s Rigoletto. Other notable performances included Count Almaviva in Tacoma Opera’s Le Nozze di Figaro, Victor in the world premier of Cascade Chamber Opera’s production of Tango of the White Gardenia and Bass Soloist with the Sunriver Music Festival’s Bernstein Celebration.

Upcoming performances include returning to San Francisco to reprise the role of The Businessman in Rachel Portman’s The Little Prince with Opera Parallèle as well as bass soloist with Portland Chamber Orchestra’s Messiah in December.

Isenberg holds degrees in music and Italian literature from Binghamton University. For 11 years John worked for the Tri-Cities Opera Company in Binghamton, N.Y., first as accompanist, then additionally as Education Outreach coordinator and Chorus Master. He currently works as a pianist and vocal coach at Binghamton University, also accompanying the Opera Workshop program.

Additionally, Isenberg performs on harpsichord with Binghamton Baroque Orchestra and is a member of the (mostly Scottish) musical group Celtic Charm, under the direction of Marijane Wojtowitz. He and Wojtowitz also perform together as the duo Fire and Ivory.

No advanced tickets are required for either concert and a free will offering will be taken at each.
