Diversity continues at Umbrella Academy

Umbrella Academy

Remembering or history lesson? Walk don’t run? Identity or orientation? The diversity offered by Umbrella Academy just continues to develop. Still located upstairs at the Colburn Free Library, located at 275 Main St. in Owego, sessions are held on alternate Tuesdays from 6:45 to 8:15 p.m.

On Tuesdays, Oct. 16 and 30, George Lohmann will facilitate “1968 Remembered.” When we consider today’s turbulent political scene, some of us remember similar tensions – 50 years ago. Some call 1968 the “year that rocked the world,” and for good reason. Not only was it the year that Martin Luther King, Jr. and Robert Kennedy were assassinated but, for various reasons, protests occurred all over the world.

It was also the year that NASA successfully circumnavigated the moon. The session will begin with those who remember 1968 reminiscing about what they were up to that year, followed by a review of key events of that year with discussions of their significance.  Please note that this will be two sessions long.

On Tuesday, Nov. 13, Erin Taylor-Talcott will present “Wiggle While You Walk.” Pedestrianism, which began in the 19th century, is a form of competitive walking, now known as race walking. Taylor-Talcott will walk participants through a brief history of the sport, including the Olympics and its issue of remaining the last lingering remnant of gender inequity left in international track and field.

In 2016 Erin Taylor-Talcott was officially named to the 50K team for the IAAF World Team Championships in Rome, Italy. This was the first time women were allowed to compete at that event.  Most recently she won the 5,000-meter race in Malaga, Spain.

On Tuesday, Nov. 27, Dr. Meisha Lohmann, Dr. Lisa Caniglio and George Lohmann will lead a roundtable discussion titled “Identity or Orientation?” Many confuse the issue of one’s gender identity with sexual orientation, making assumptions that are not necessarily accurate. This session will explore these misconceptions in an effort to provide more clarity and a better understanding of these phenomena.

Umbrella Academy founders Lohmann and Coniglio hold PhDs in medieval literature and neurobiology respectively. George Lohmann has a MA in literature.

All sessions are free to the public and all are welcome.
