Auditions planned for ‘The Full Monty’

The Ti-Ahwaga Community Players have announced their upcoming October 2018 production of the hit Broadway musical, The Full Monty. They are now casting for the show.

Auditions are being held at the Playhouse, located at 42 Delphine St. in Owego, on Aug. 6, 7 and 9, beginning at 7 p.m.

The casting for the show calls for 12 men, one of which is an African American with a show stopping number; eight women, all ranging in age from mid 20’s through early 50’s; and a teen-age male, of 16 years old. 

Vocal ranges include key solo work; the men sing a variety of styles with considerable range. The women all sing in a moderate Mezzo / Belt range.  

No dance training or experience in any particular style is required, but many characters need to perform synchronized movement well, while singing tight harmonies. 

There are some non-dancing and non-singing roles, but for the audition, everyone should have a prepared a monologue and a song to sing (accompanist will be provided), read from the script and be required to exhibit some movement ability.

Nominated for nine Tony Awards when it opened on Broadway in October of 2006, the show has a book by Tony award winning playwright Terrance McNally with music and lyrics by David Yazbek. 

It tells the story of six unemployed, out of shape steel-mill workers from Buffalo, N.Y. who need to pick up some extra cash. After seeing the popularity of a male stripper among the local women, the men decide to put on a strip show of their own. Their gimmick is simple: they will go the full monty – stripping on stage.  This plan forces the men to come to terms with their own fears of inadequacy, both physically and as providers for their families.

The production will open Friday, Oct. 5, and run on Friday and Saturday evenings, with a Sunday matinee Oct. 21.  

Rehearsals will begin Aug. 12 and run Sunday afternoons and Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday evenings until the show’s opening.
