Historic Owego Marketplace celebrates 40 Years during First Friday

The Historic Owego Marketplace (HOM) celebrates 40 years of service as a non-profit organization serving the Village Of Owego. Celebrate their birthday as well during Owego’s First Friday planned for Aug. 3, and running from 5 to 8 p.m.

HOM invites you to celebrate with them with live music from the Basin Street Jazz Band as well as free ice cream treats for everyone, provided from Ice Cream Works’ truck, both located on the corner of Lake and Front Streets beginning at 6 p.m.

HOM will also be celebrating the spirit and history of Owego with a Vintage Car display, provided courtesy of this month’s sponsor, The Early Owego Antique Center.

To help celebrate, the popular mercantile will be sponsoring a period grouping of Vintage automobiles to be parked on Lake Street, as they would have been 40-100 years ago.

Also on display will be a Space-age Style Duncan parking meter, which was once part of the many such meters throughout the Village streets. Original Period 1970’s cross street business banners will be highlighted as well.

The Tioga County History Museum will be open special hours during First Friday. Visit the museum for a special display of photos dating back 40 to 100 years.

Don’t forget to celebrate a day early when HOM will sponsor a community movie night featuring Trolls! Bring the kids and lawn chairs to Draper Park, located on Front Street near the bridge, and enjoy a movie under the stars! The movie will begin at dusk, weather permitting.

The First Friday Passport will be available for pickup at participating locations beginning Thursday, Aug. 2. Many Owego businesses will offer additional discounts and offerings to celebrate the 40th anniversary of HOM.

Enjoy food, art, music and more, while supporting local business.

The Historic Owego Marketplace has a long-standing relationship with the Historic Village of Owego, spanning four decades. The organization was originally conceived and granted 5013c non-profit status in 1978 as the Riverow Restoration Corporation. HOM has maintained the same mission since that time, to enhance and maintain the Village of Owego as a vital, thriving, retail and cultural center.

HOM is responsible for producing all 38 years of Owego’s Strawberry Festival, as well as First Friday, Holiday Showcase and Lights on the River, among other projects such as beautification efforts around the village.
