It was 1948! The 33-1/3 RPM LP is introduced, leading to the demise of the 78. “Candy Bombers” are dropping candy over Berlin for the children trapped by the Berlin Wall. President Truman desegregates the armed forces, three months before he is reelected for his second term.

But these were minor events in the love-struck eyes of Bud and Helen (Roth) Lohmann, now of Waverly. On June 19, 70 years ago, they joined hands in wedlock and have remained married to this day. They enjoyed a simple ceremony with family and friends at the First Presbyterian Church in Newtown, Pa.

A year later their first son, George, was born, followed by a second, Michael, two years later. In two more years their first daughter, Nancy, arrived to be followed in two more years by Donna.

At about that time they would move the family to Chambersburg, Pa., and then Dover, Del. as Bud pursued a new career as a pipeline engineer. That career would finally bring the whole family to Waverly in 1960, where Bud would gradually advance from engineer to CEO of Pennsylvania and Southern Gas Company, and where Helen would work in the admissions office at Robert Packer Hospital.

In the decades to follow the family would grow by eight grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild.

A celebration of Bud and Helen’s anniversary was hosted by their children at their youngest daughter’s home in Waverly on Sunday, June 10. Family and friends wished them well, reminisced, and several observed, “I’ve never attended a 70th wedding anniversary before.”

Even the maid of honor, Helen’s sister Maryann, came all the way from Doylestown, Pa. to wish them a happy anniversary.
