Dear Editor,
When World War II ended I was 17 and a senior in high school. I did what 17 year olds do. I took my high school sweetheart to the village park and we sat on one of the park benches.
It was a beautiful day and we had a magnificent view of the Hudson River, with the palisades on the far side. I looked around the park and saw no one else there, so I leaned over and kissed her.
I was completely to hear loud cheers. Just at that moment a troop ship was passing by, with hundreds of G.I.’s on their way home from Europe, where they had just won the war.
P.S. I did not get married until 10 years later, and then to a girl (now deceased) from Santa Clara, N.Y. in the Adirondacks.
Sincerely,
Karl Tiemann
