The Tioga County Soil and Water Conservation District hosted this year’s annual Southern Tier Regional Envirothon in conjunction with Broome, Chemung, Tompkins, and Schuyler Counties Soil and Water Conservation Districts.

Students were tested on a wide variety of subjects including Aquatic Ecology, Forestry, Soils and Land Use, Wildlife, and Current Issues.

The event was hosted at the Tioga County Sportsman’s Association on April 30. Ten teams competed from Tioga County; two from Candor, four from Tioga Central and four from Newark Valley.

Candor Central School’s Candor Core won first place for Tioga County and will advance to the NYS Envirothon taking place on May 23 and 24 at Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva, N.Y.

The Candor Core also won the regional title for this year’s Envirothon, meaning they scored the highest of all 36 teams that competed. Newark Valley also had two teams within the top ten.

The National Competition this year will be held July 22-28 and will be held in Pocatello, Idaho at Idaho State University. Every year, Tioga County schools are encouraged to participate in the competition and it is hoped that the other school districts will attend next year.

For more information on signing your school district up for next year, contact Alex Marks at (607) 687-3553 or email to Marksa@co.tioga.ny.us
