A special Easter event, the Stations of the Cross, was held at the Gospel Chapel, located at 203 North Ave. in Owego, on March 29 and 30.
The self-guided tour, held in the church fellowship rooms, allowed guests to walk through the events that Jesus traveled during his last days on Earth, and as the Church communicated, “A journey not to be forgotten.”
Church member Joan Dawson, and one of about 12 individuals who designed and crafted each station, shared, “We hope this touched people in a special way. It’s a humbled-down version, and it’s meant to bring people closer to Christ.”
The Gospel Chapel’s Stations of the Cross included 12 separate stations, and where they invited guests to take their time reading the passages of scripture and reflect on each event.
A welcome sign read, “Embrace each station with a humble heart and ‘touch the cross.’ In addition, ‘nail your sins’ to the cross, and take a prayer slip at each station as you journey with Him.”
From station one, “Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane,” to station six, “Jesus Carries His Burden,” and then on to station eight, “Crucified,” and the eleventh station, “Jesus’ Death,” to the twelfth station, “Jesus is placed in the Tomb,” visitors were welcomed to interact at each station, such as lighting a candle, writing their own sins on paper and nailing it to a board, along with taking home a souvenir cross, among other hands-on activities.
A craft station for children was also set up inside the fellowship rooms.
Senior Pastor Andy Fey shared, “The Stations of the Cross represents the power of resurrection for everyone,” adding that part of the message is also, “God’s love for everyone.”
Church member Bill Lewis added, “It was a journey putting all this together.”
Dawson said she appreciates the outpouring of help from the congregation, and the time members donated to make it successful.
The Gospel Chapel, nestled between Weaver Automotive and a private home, dates back to the early 1970’s. Sunday Worship Services are held at 10:30 a.m.
