Tioga County Contradance is pleased to announce a community dance event featuring the national band Continental Drift, with expert musicians (Eileen Nicholson Kalfass, fiddle; Eric Anderson, piano; and special guest, Terry Wergeland, accordion; from both coasts of the country.

The dance will be held on Sunday, March 18, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Countryside Community Center located at 9 Sheldon Guile Blvd. in Owego, N.Y. All dances will be taught and prompted by caller Casey Carr. General admission is $7, students and seniors 55 and older are $5, and there is a $15 family maximum.

Continental Drift has an exciting repertoire of tunes from New England, Scotland, Ireland, and Quebec, Nova Scotia and beyond, and the knack for playing just the right tune for a dance.

The term contradance is derived from “country dance.” The contradance is related to English country dancing and square dancing. Like square dancing, contradancing is done to a walking step and is easy to learn.

A folk dance, it historically involves people of all ages. The caller teaches each dance during a “walkthrough,” allowing even beginning dancers to feel comfortable.

Beginners and families are welcome. Bring friends, family, or come by yourself.

Dances with live music will be held on the third Sunday of each month through 2018. For more information, contact Stu Johnson by email to Joycestu59@aol.com or Dean Thelen by email to thelend@yahoo.com.

This program is made possible in part, with public funds from NYSCA’s Decentralization Program administered regionally by The ARTS Council of the Southern Finger Lakes.
