Homesteading Series: Chickens!

Have you been thinking about having a small flock of chickens? Love the idea of fresh, homegrown eggs for breakfast? Want to taste a roast chicken that has that old-time flavor?

Join Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE) for their chicken workshops on Saturday, Jan. 20, at Cornell Cooperative Extension of Tioga County.  At 9 a.m. they will focus on raising a flock of laying chickens and at 10:30 a.m. they will discuss raising chickens for meat.  Each class is $5 per person, and registration is requested.

The chicken workshops kick off a series of homesteading workshops that will be held Saturday mornings. Workshops on canning, pressure canning, composting with worms, growing berries, starting an apple orchard, and growing unusual fruits are among the planned classes. Go to one class, or go to the whole series!

After the workshops conclude for the morning, participants can join them at a nearby restaurant for lunch. Pay for your own lunch, but then join them at a table where they will share homesteading tips, stories, and just get to know each other.

They are also planning a seed swap for Feb. 24, from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Bring your saved seeds and swap with other gardeners! There is no fee for this, and you don’t even need to have seeds to share – they have lots of seeds to give out.

Find out more about the classes at the CCE Tioga website, tioga.cce.cornell.edu, and register for classes by calling (607) 687-4020. All classes will be held at 56 Main St. in Owego.
