Opinion: Positive electronic presence is needed

Dear Editor,

One wants to celebrate Bruce Nelson’s announcement that Small Town 360 will develop virtual tours of his magnificent properties. To paraphrase Nelson’s words in the Pennysaver, this electronic celebration of his work will “inspire – boost pride – give people (an) opportunity to see attractive, exciting buildings (a) celebration of the incredible historic buildings.” Thank you, Mr. Nelson!

This inspirational program rejects every sentiment displayed in the vulgar disemboweling of the OHPC and the will of the majority with the imposition of Public Law 3.

Moving from the Nelson Development site I browsed the Village webpage, various Village Facebook pages and Wikipedia listings. I was very disappointed by the image the Village projects to the world in cyberspace.

Let’s say I am an average person who wishes to keep current on my smart phone; browsing the official Village webpage in the banner “News” section, the most recent postings are from Nov. 13, Oct. 13 and Sept. 26. The most recent Trustee’s Minutes are from Nov. 20. Where are Dec. 4 and 20?

The paving projects are listed for September. My personal favorite listing was that the Marvin Park pool is open for an adult swim on this late January evening!

If the Village administrators are genuinely interested in moving the Village forward, please repair the electronic floorboards of the Village!

In this new millennium, creating Village Facebook pages (rather than doing business on your “Party” page), properly maintaining the Village webpage, and enhancing the Wikipedia pages for the Village and its attractions are imperatives.

Why not do business, attract people, and encourage investment and entrepreneurship, using the freely available modern electronic marketplace, using minimal-cost modern communication mechanisms?

Effective communication is indicative of a well-run modern community with a forward-looking vision. Modern communication is in the first instance electronic.  Properly maintaining the Village electronic presence seems to be a minimal competence.

An affirmative program of community building and development requires personal investment in research, outreach, modeling, and a bit of imagination. A positive web presence is inspirational.

Please make Owego a digital community where our young people can share links to and brag about our community. Our Village leaders seem unmotivated to maintain electronic competence at the simplest levels.

I pray in the March election that candidates for Village office can campaign to, at a minimum, “fix the free stuff” and promulgate a positive electronic presence.

Sincerely,

Peter C. Gordon
