Updated: State Police involved in a pursuit with a wanted person in the City of Binghamton

Shortly after 5 p.m. on Jan. 2, State Police troopers became involved in a pursuit with a suspect wanted on a warrant of arrest. A preliminary investigation revealed that on Jan. 2, 2018, at approximately 5:05 p.m., troopers initiated a pursuit of a 2017 Ford Fusion on Mitchell Avenue in the City of Binghamton being operated by a suspect wanted on an active warrant of arrest.

Police stated that the suspect, James A. Giacalone, age 36 of Glen Aubrey, N.Y., fled in the vehicle and was pursued on several city streets and onto Conklin Avenue, operating in a reckless and dangerous manner.

Giacalone eventually turned onto Alfred Street and crashed his vehicle into a utility pole, where troopers exited their patrol vehicles to take Giacalone into custody.

In an attempt to escape, Giacalone backed his vehicle down Alfred Street, across Conklin Avenue, and into a parking lot where he stopped.

As the troopers approached the vehicle, Giacalone suddenly accelerated forward, striking one of the pursuing troopers.

That member discharged one round from his division-issued sidearm. Giacalone received a gunshot wound to the face, but continued to flee in his vehicle.

He was located on foot a short distance away by responding law enforcement and was taken into custody.

Giacalone was taken to Wilson Hospital and transferred to Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, Pa. for treatment of his injuries.

The injured trooper was taken to Wilson Hospital for leg and facial injuries and was treated and released.

The criminal investigation is ongoing. The New York State Police are asking the public for any witnesses or information related to this incident to contact them at (607) 775-1241.

The New York State Police were assisted in this investigation by the Binghamton Police Department, Broome County Sherriff’s Department, Endicott Police Department, FBI, Broome County District Attorney, and Superior Ambulance.
