Community Foundation for the Twin Tiers announces youth grant awards

Theresa Pipher receives a grant award from Phyllis Rynone and Gail Barton, representing the Tioga County Advisory Committee of the Community Foundation for the Twin Tiers (CFTT). The award was from the Hooker Fund of the CFTT and will be used by the Carantouan Greenway to present educational outreach on the Deer Tick and Lyme disease to Waverly’s eighth graders.

The Board of Directors of the Community Foundation for the Twin Tiers has approved the 2017 Floyd Hooker youth grants for Tioga County, N.Y. The awards total $21,700 to six non-profit organizations and school districts serving the county.

“The Community Foundation for the Twin Tiers and its Tioga County Advisory Board is committed to making an immediate impact by following the wishes of a former Tioga County, New York resident Floyd Hooker,” said Suzanne Lee, president and CEO of the Community Foundation for the Twin Tiers.

Lee added, “His commitment to the young people of Tioga County through his fund at the Community Foundation will support youth programs in the county forever. Making a substantial impact by supporting projects and programs that will make a real difference in improving the health and welfare of our young people in all corners of Tioga County, New York.” 

The full list of the 2016 Floyd Hooker Fund grants for youth for Tioga County, New York is as follows.

Catholic Charities Tompkins/Tioga received $4,720 in funding for the after school YES program. The funds will be used to implement six activities for students participating in the YES Club, in partnership with Newark Valley and Spencer-Van Etten High Schools and for special assistance. 

The Food Bank of the Southern Tier received $2,500 for the expansion of the BackPack Program in Tioga County, N.Y. The program provides food for children to supplement weekends and holiday meals during the school year.

The Candor Central School District received $1,750 for the Laugh-a-Lot Poetry program. The dollars will fund bringing this program to the Candor Elementary School in the 2017-2018 school year.

Carantouan Greenway was awarded $1,230 for the Tick and Lyme disease education program. This project follows the Greenway’s highly successful 2016 Tick and Lyme disease educational awareness and signage campaign, and will build on those relationships and findings, to expand programming to the youth at Tioga County schools.

VFW Post 1371 received an award of $4,000 for the children’s Christmas Party, held in Tioga County, N.Y. for children 12 years of age and under. 

The Tioga Central School District received $7,500 for a Hoop House. The funds will be used to purchase materials for the Hoop House, which will allow year round agriculture lessons in conjunction with the School Garden. The high school’s technology class will construct the Hoop House, and will engage community volunteers.

The Community Foundation for the Twin Tiers serves the counties of Bradford, Potter, Sullivan and Tioga in Pennsylvania, and in Tioga County, N.Y. 

Since 2002, the Community Foundation has built a strong reputation for helping individuals, families, corporations, and non-profit organizations achieve their charitable goals. 

Through its grant making, Community Foundation partners with non-profits to find solutions to the area’s most pressing issues. It is through this potent combination of its generous community members and organizations working hard at helping those who are less fortunate that the Community Foundation can fulfill its mission.
