The 2017 Angel Tree in the Spalding Memorial Library lobby is bedecked with holiday ornaments that can bring joy to local students. Each ornament gives information about a child’s reading interest and grade level, and represents a child who can benefit from personal ownership of a book.
This year’s Angel Tree has been rechristened in memory of Connie Roupp, who passed away in February. Connie served as a librarian in the Athens School District for 33 years, and spearheaded the Angel Tree effort for over a decade. The Spalding Memorial Library and the Kids-at-Risk program sponsor the Angel Tree Project.
Individuals may shop for books using the chosen ornament(s) as a guide, or make a monetary donation to the program that will be used by the library to purchase books. Donations will be accepted until Dec. 15.
The Friends of the Spalding Memorial Library and volunteers from Kids-at-Risk will gift wrap all donated books. The books will be distributed to local school children during the week before Christmas.
In his book I Can Read With My Eyes Shut, Dr. Seuss writes, “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more you learn, the more places you’ll go”. Reading and learning go together. With the gift of a book this holiday season, you can help a student learn.
