Readers’ Column for the week of Dec. 10, 2017

You may call the Owego Pennysaver Readers’ Column at (607) 687-2378 24-hours a day, or e-mail comments to readerscolumn@stny.rr.com. We reserve the right to revise or reject any message.

Now that we have the girls picking on the boys, when are we going to have the girls picking on the girls AND the boys picking on the boys? Imagine that, and it will happen. ~

I read in your Pennysaver last week where congressman Maurice Hinchey passed away. What I remember about him the most was he was boarding an airplane and he had a loaded pistol in his briefcase. He said he forgot to take it out. This is a Federal offense with jail time for most. Nothing was ever done because he was a politician. Any other individual would have been convicted of federal charges and put in jail. What a fair system we have!

In reply to the gluten free question; there is no equal substitute for wheat flour. There are different flour blends for each baked good. Suggest you buy a gluten free cookbook.

~

Really? I asked this elderly person if I could hunt on his land. He said well yes, go right ahead. Well there were beef cows everywhere in his woods. I couldn’t find a deer anywhere. What a disappointment!

~

I’m trying to contact someone and have no idea how to contact him. He came to my beauty shop and he left something here. The message is this: ERNIE PISCHEL, please contact Jean at the beauty shop in Candor, URGENT!

~

I read in this week’s Pennysaver about the instance where the father was telling the child she would not be seeing her mother again. I can imagine the psychological problems that child will be having when she is growing up. That is right, they don’t understand the damage they are doing to that child when the child is threatened she won’t be seeing her mother again. It’s pathetic!

I would like to say I agree with the lady that something should be done about these food give-aways. I have seen people throw things away because they don’t like it or they don’t want it. If you live in Owego stay in Owego and if you live in Apalachin stay in Apalachin. Don’t keep going around to all the food pantries and keep taking all you want. That’s ridiculous!

~

I would like to know why they don’t make Christmas wrap anymore like they used to. I know it comes in the tissue paper, but I don’t like wrapping anything in tissue paper and it’s so much easier to store than these big rolls of wrapping paper.

~

I found a pair of sunglasses. I think they are prescription, and I found them on Main Street across from the library. If they are yours and you are looking for them you can call 223-4430, leave a description and a contact number.

~

Correction, Marshland Road extension needs to be paved some day. I meant to say bumpy, like a railroad, with potholes and patches. I hope I didn’t offend anyone. The Highway Department does a great job keeping the road in shape. Also, I enjoy a good joke.

~

Is the Pennysaver the official VFW newsletter now? It seems like every article on the front page anymore is about the VFW. Just wondering if you people knew that there are other clubs in town that do equally good things for the community like the American Legion, Owego Elks and Owego Moose. I think it’s wrong you continue to write just about the VFW and not the other clubs in town.

I agree there should be one central control for food distribution, but I say it goes one step further in that when people come in and eat a prepared meal and go home. There would be no waste; there would be no fraud. We do not need to overstock their shelves at home. I have to buy my own groceries and I cannot afford to overstock my own shelves and I am doing very well and I remain healthy.

Congratulations Tioga Central School for getting $744,985 for Pre-K classrooms. NOW let’s see if they can offer a full day Pre-K to accommodate the school district better. Many school district parents want this.

~

A big thanks to the Tioga County Highway Department for removing the speed bumps on Day Hollow Road. It makes driving the road a pleasure.

~

Will someone please tell me what gluten is? I see so much stuff that is ‘gluten free’ it makes me wonder if it is bad for us, and how come there are products with it in it. Is it something to worry about?

~

There will be a referendum on the dissolution of the Village of Van Etten on Monday, Dec. 11 at the Community Center, 6 Gee St. in Van Etten from noon until 9 p.m. All registered village residents may vote.

~

The OACSD Budget Process begins this January. “We are very pleased for the seventh year in a row to propose a negative tax levy. We recognize the financial challenges our community.” This comes from the last Sidney School District Budget Newsletter. This was the work of Mr. Corey Greene, who is our new Superintendent. In OACSD’s last Budget Newsletter, the headline reads, “OA 9-Year Average Tax Levy Increase is Lowest in BT-BOCES Region”. There are some unique circumstances behind each statement, however ours should be straight and read, “Since 2011 OACSD has increased property taxes to the maximum extent possible.” There is one trivial exception. Straight talk, full disclosure, and damage recovery needs to begin this year! Now that we have a new sheriff in town the BOE needs to use his talents.

National Political Viewpoints

By the time you read this we will have a new Trump tax plan, which will make America great once again. Taxpayers, in spite of the fake news media and loser Democrats will have more to spend. A fantastic success for our wonderful, honest and hard working President Trump. Go Trump!

~

For all you Republican sheep out there, you think you’re going to save a few pennies with this new tax bill. Well what do you think the Republican plan is? Bankrupt the government so they can cut the social programs in a couple years, then they will say oh we don’t have money to pay for the social programs, we’re going to have to cut them and by the way you’re saving a few pennies and your man Trump, he’s saving millions! It’s pretty good you can vote yourself a million dollar tax cut. That’s not a bad deal. You people need to wake up!

~

I’m wondering if anybody out there would like to go halves on a new business venture, selling t-shirts and hats that say “thank you Bob Mueller for making America great again”. If anybody is ever interested put a message in next week’s Pennysaver and we can sit down and talk because these hats and t-shirts are going to be tremendous sellers! Everybody’s going to want one!

~

Jose Zarate, the five time deported and seven time convicted felon who murdered Kate Steinle in San Francisco was found not guilty of murder in any form by an O.J. Simpson type jury. You can also thank Democrat Harry Reed and Republican Mitch McConnell and the sanctuary city liberal democrats for preventing the enactment of Kate’s Law, which makes it mandatory for deported convicted felons who sneak back into the United States to go directly to jail. Attorney General Sessions can put the despicable Zarate in for at least 10 years based on his prior convictions. Let’s hope Sessions mans up for a change and let the Republican’s defund all sanctuary states.

~

The Republican Express Gravy Train Tax Reform Bill is on its way to the wealthy people with all its benefits. The locals will be stopping by to pick up a chunk of your social security, Medicare and Medicaid. Better bring granny home from the nursing place.

~

To Double Standard, first, your complaint should have gone in the National Political viewpoints. If all you could complain about was a pistol, get a life! Apparently he didn’t hide the gun.

~

What a great leader we have. Trump endorses accused child molester Ray Moore? What is going on in this country of ours? It’s great news to all the pedophiles that are lingering around out there. Where are all the churches and the Holy Evangelicals? Not a word. Disgusting!

~

To the person who called in last week’s column that was so worried about losing John McCain. Well, when that happens you just vote in another crook.

~

I think I’m right. Our president, Mr. Trump, had trouble with his feet and got out of the service. Well, I’ve got trouble with my feet but that was from the service! Just letting people know.

~

I am sick and tired of hearing about these women accusing the men and all this business about sexual allegations. Well, what if men accused women of doing things like that? There are some women who are aggressive with men and dress provocatively. It works two ways!

~

I say no great loss losing John McCain in congress. He’s done nothing but be an obstacle all along. He claims to be Republican, but I believe he’s a Democrat’s best friend.

~

I never understood how Obama got to be a two-term president. I questioned everything about him. Trump’s done more good for the American people in one year than Obama did in eight years. We’ve had 3 percent growth in each quarter and it’s only getting better. We haven’t seen economic growth like that in a decade and now Obama and his pal Hillary continue to divide and destroy our country. They need to chill out, sit quietly and understand the American people do not want to hear from them anymore.

~

Every time Trump signs a document with a stroke of his pen it’s like a stab to the heart of the American people.

~

It’s now becoming very clear why everyone was so upset that Hillary did not win in November. Such corruption being uncovered daily that the American people would never have known about. What must the Hillary supporters be thinking now?

~

Attorney General Jeff Sessions is the new Barney Fife.

~

Senator Gillibrand claims to be a champion for women and says Bill Clinton should have been held accountable. What did I miss? She’s been rubbing elbows with the Clintons for years, accepting their monetary donations and their endorsements. The hypocrisy continues.

~

Andrew Cuomo running for president? Please God, let me wake up from that nightmare!

~

If “Alabama values” go to Washington, will it require a doubling of the guards at Washington D.C. Jr. High Schools?

~

Every Republican President since Ronald Reagan has cut taxes on the wealthy promising that it would help the middle class. It has only brought inflation and bigger deficits. Now our billionaire “populist” leader has done the same. Does anyone really expect a different result?

~

When Donald Trump promised to “drain the swamp” in his run for the Presidency, he probably wasn’t thinking that Robert Mueller will probably do the job for him.

~

“For the national security state, the priority had always been to control the narrative at any price. A truly open inquiry into the JFK murder was too fraught with potential unknowns and potential problematic disclosures. Give the people a hero and a bedtime story and let destiny sort out the rest. The corporate news media, back in 1963, were entirely agents of that national security state. Thus the Camelot myth was born.” From “How the Camelot Myth Was Born: Reflections on JFK’s Public Execution” by Bob Hennelly. Insider NJ. 27 November 2017

~

The Republican tax plan mandates automatic Medicare cuts of at least $25 billion in 2018 and $400 billion over 10 years. (According to the Congressional Budget Office).
