Pearl Harbor Remembrance Ceremony held in Owego Pearl Harbor Survivor Bill Kennedy shared memories of Sunday, Dec. 7, from his wheelchair at a ceremony held Thursday in Owego. When Bugler Dean Morgan played taps, ending the remembrance service, Bill Kennedy rose from his wheelchair, stood at attention, and placed his hand over his heart.

The VFW in Owego was the location for a remembrance event on Dec. 7, marking the 76th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor.

Present at the event was Bill Kennedy of Owego. Kennedy was a 20-year-old Army Air Force Private First Class Aircraft Mechanic when the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor happened in 1941.

On Thursday, Kennedy shared his story. 

The event was held in the Memorial Hall for Seaman First Class Delmar Dale Sibley, who is entombed in the USS Arizona.

A U.S. Navy remembrance by CDR Mark Angelo, USN, stationed at Lockheed Martin-Owego. Seaman First Class Delmar Dale Sibley, entombed on the U.SS. Arizona since Dec. 7, 1941, was remembered in front of his portrait and shadow box of valor medals at his Glenn A. Warner Post 1371 Veterans of Foreign Wars Memorial Hall on the 10th anniversary of its dedication.

Town of Owego Supervisor Donald Castellucci Jr. reflects on visiting the U.S.S. Arizona at Pearl Harbor. He shared stories with Pearl Harbor Survivor Bill Kennedy while driving him from his Bradley Avenue Owego home to his reserved parking space and handicap elevator at the VFW’s Warner Hall.

Pearl Harbor Survivors Lester “Buster” Dunham, Donald Stocks and Richard Hopkins are remembered. Doris Camp discovered another unreported Owego Pearl Harbor Survivor – Gurdon Judge – who signed the original VFW Post 1371 Charter in June 1942.

Stepson Curtis Anthony drove up from Philadelphia to be with family and to tell stories.
