The Bread of Life Food Pantry, a branch of the Resource Center of Candor, is a proud recipient of a used van, donated by Square Deal Machining, Inc. (SDMI) of Marathon, N.Y.

Linda Wintermute, of the Resource Center of Candor and Bread of Life Food Pantry commented, “We recognize Square Deal Machining for their incredible act of kindness.”

Wintermute explained during a phone interview that the van will be extremely beneficial in picking up food for the pantry, as well as delivering food to clients who are otherwise unable to go to the pantry during scheduled hours. In the past, volunteers used three or more of their own personal vehicles to pick up as much as 300 pounds of food every week for the pantry.

SDMI President, Joe Morgan, a supporter of local charities, was on hand at a Nov. 18 gathering at the pantry.  The Bread of Life staff had replied to a Craigslist ad regarding the van for sale, which was owned by Morgan; but instead, Morgan donated it.

The Bread of Life Food Pantry, located at 1 Water St. in Candor, N.Y., has been serving the Candor School District for eleven years. A partner with the Food Bank of the Southern Tier, Bread of Life also receives donations from local businesses and restaurants.

Upwards of 130 families are served each week, which includes seniors and families with young children. During the holiday season, the need increases, and in November, 130 turkeys were distributed along with a number of hams; and all in time for Thanksgiving. The pantry also distributes food items and baby diapers and formula to their clients during emergency needs.

In addition, the Resource Center of Candor co-sponsors an annual Toys for Tots campaign, and via their Kids Corner distributes children’s books for free, and offers clothing at designated time periods, as well as toiletry items. The center hosts an annual Easter Egg Hunt in the spring, too, along with other activities and events throughout the year.

For additional information, follow the Resource Center of Candor on Facebook, or call (607) 793-4643. Food pantry hours are every Wednesday from 3 to 5:30 p.m.
