For the third time in five years, the OFA Girls Varsity Volleyball team has won the state championship.

Following the Section four Class B sectional title on Nov. 4, and then the regional semi-final victory on Nov. 7, the team went on to win the regional’s on Nov. 12, and topped it off with the championship on Nov. 19.

Coach Brittney Race commented, “After beating Spackenkill in four (the regional final), I knew we had a pretty good shot to win it all. I am proud that these girls battled like they did to pull out a win in that match. They dug deep and played hard to get back on track after not playing well in the beginning.”

When asked about the bus ride to the championship match, Race shared, “It was loud! The girls were very excited,” and further added that the team was jamming out to music and singing during the entire trip.

When the team departed the bus, Race said, “I had a really good feeling that the girls were ready, and that they were going to win it all.”

Race explained that once the championship match started, the team fell behind in game one, but instead of panic, the team remained calm and worked together to battle back. Race said she wasn’t worried, because the team had persevered in similar situations all throughout the regular season.

Race said, “After we pulled out that first game I knew the girls weren’t going to look back.”

Race described, “The team picked up steam and ran with it,” and further commented that all the team members played incredibly well to finish out the match.

Race added, “I couldn’t be more excited and proud of them for what they have accomplished,” and concluded, “They deserved that win!”

For Race, after seven seasons as coach, she has been part of seven STAC and Section 4 Class B titles, along with state titles in 2013, 2015 and 2017.
