Free family craft fun offered at the Berkshire Free Library

The Berkshire Free Library is hosting two craft nights that are free to Northern Tioga area families. Craft nights include Soap Making on Tuesday, Nov. 14 and Candle Dipping on Tuesday, Dec. 5, both beginning at 6:30 p.m.

The program is open to all ages; however, an adult must accompany children. The programs will be held in the Berkshire Community Hall on Jewett Hill Road behind the library.

Participants will craft their own soap with a variety of molds and natural additions such as hibiscus flowers, jojoba, lavender and vanilla beans. Candles may be dipped or molded with many vegetable waxes to choose from, as well as natural white and yellow beeswax. Participants can choose scents colors for the candles, which can be used as gifts or enjoyed at home.

Pre-registration is required. Call the library at 657-4418 by Nov. 10 for the soap-making program and by Dec. 2 for the candle dipping activity.

Program presenter Lindsay Sprague has been teaching students of all ages and abilities the joys of sustainable agriculture since 2008. With programs such as “The Traveling Farm”, “Chickens Around the World”, “Horses 101”, and “Butterfly Conservation”, she loves encouraging children to explore their natural environment and learn new ways to use the resources at their library.

A recent Cornell University graduate from the Department of Animal Science, she regularly volunteers to teach at the Cornell Splash program in addition to being a sound technician, AWANA, and youth leader at First Baptist Church in Newark Valley.
