On Thursday, Oct. 19, Tioga County Health & Human Services employees wore purple for Domestic Violence Awareness Day. Employees also raised money to support A New Hope Center, a non-profit organization in Owego providing support, advocacy, and counseling for victims of domestic violence.

Every year over 4.7 million women are victims of domestic violence. One in four women and one in seven men will be victims of intimate partner violence at some point in their lives. Only 25 percent of physical assaults are reported to the police each year. Many women, men and children live in fear, waiting for the next attack to occur.

If you are experiencing domestic violence, call A New Hope Center at (607) 687- 6866 or the National Hotline at 1-800-696-7600, which are available 24 hours a day. Anyone who is in a life-threatening situation should call 911.
